  • Good summer reading material

    I'm reading a good horror-suspense book:

A Consumer's Dictionary of Food Additives by Ruth Winter.

It makes me very happy that I don't eat the additive/preservative packed stuff other people eat.

    Ick.

Sally Fallon's book Nourishing Traditions is good book too.

    Re: Good summer reading material

I love looking up ingredients now...when someone asks if something is "legal" I like to go look up what they are putting into their bodies....eeeeeewwwwwwwww!!!! The thought of the number of chemicals some think is "healthy" amazes me!!!

Good luck -- hope the book doesn't keep you up at night!!! LOL

Suspense and horror - sounds good.
Do any of those books talk about stuff added to food that is not on the label. I read a bit ago about how for instance skim milk is whitened but this is not something they need to add to the label when they sell it. I think this is something I would love to learn more about.

One of the minor reasons I gave up smoking (major, health!) was because of an article I read that said the tobacco companies were not required to tell the public what they put in their particular brand of cigarettes - that worried me!

            Re: Good summer reading material

There was one additive...really scary. Apparently it's toxic at 400 parts per million, but the FDA allows it in foods up to 100 parts per milion.

Sure that doesn't seem alot if you eat the product once or twice a year, but I'm thinking, what if you eat this product daily or several times daily! Scary!

liv, I'll have to look for that. Sally Fallon's book doesn't mention it but she does goes through things like "good" fats, "good" protein sources, and what is high quality food.

It really makes you think twice or several times about the foods available to us.

can i add some books to read?

I actually have (well, on CD) right now 3 of Michael Pollen's books:
              The Omnivore's Dilemma
              In Defense of Food
              &
              The Botony of Desire

I also have a book called (on CD) "Twinkie Deconstructed" by Steve Ettinger

and - of course - Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes (this one is book form and hard to get through, but I am determined!

One last one, hard-cover that I want to get into is called "Stuffed: An Insider's Look at Who's (Really) Making America Fat" by Hank Cardello and Doug Garr
