  • Gout - Fat/protein/carb (70/20/10) - How to eat more fat?

I am a 39 year old male and need your help understand eating high fat and moderate protein.
In 2008 developed gout and started using Allopurinol and Calgout tables and gout is controlled.

I weighed 310 pounds (140 kilos) in June 2009 and started Atkins Diet induction and within 4 days severe gout attacked and could not bear and quit.

I want to do Atkins again. I read somewhere on this forum that for gout sufferers eat more fat, moderate protein and low carb (fat/protein/carb - 70/20/10). I want to understand how to eat more fat. When I buy 1 kilo chicken, there may be 200 grams of fat and 800 grams of flesh. How do I eat more fat when there is greater ratio of protein in chicken and meats per pound?

Any guidance on eating high fat and moderate protein will be greatly appreciated.

I can't comment on gout and Atkins, but I do know that you can up your fat intake by choosing dark meat poultry (thigh, leg) instead of white meat (breast, wing). Another option for added fat when eating poultry is to leave the skin on. You can also choose hamburger meat (at least in US) with different percentages of fat ranging from 85% lean to 97% lean. Choosing the lowest percentage will up your fat intake.

Another option is to include more butter, cream, and mayonnaise in your diet along with cheese (although you may have to watch upper limits depending on the stage you are in).

I have found that the only times I wind up with more protein than fat is when I eat large quantities of skinless chicken breast and/or fish which tend to be leaner meats. I imagine you'll get other good advice here, and I'll be interested to see what others have to say about gout. Although I have not had it, it seems to run in my family.

P.S. I thought my dad got his worst cases of gout from too high a sodium content? You may have to watch for sodium in deli meats and many pork products which tend to include large quantities of salt.

I will move this thread to main for you.
Have you consulted with your doctor? Gout may be one of those conditions that will make it hard to do this diet so make sure you have some medical advice and take it.

Chicken is not composed of a mixture of just fat and protein. You need to look up or use labels to find out how much protein and fat they may have.
If you eat leaner stuff like chicken you can add butter or oil to up the fat.
But make sure you check with your doctor. OK

My dad has gout and uses organic straight cherry juice that you buy from a health food store...its concentrated type i think...he can't live without that stuff now! Its higher in carbs so not sure how that will work out...one thing you can do to up the fat intake is to add butter, olive oil and such to your foods. Eat a fair amount of veggies with some protein and butter/oil. I am not a doctor but that is what my dad does for his gout...he has it controlled with the cherry juice rather than the other meds. Hope you can figure it out..I know its painful.

The thing with the ratios of fat / protein / carbs is that we measure it in terms of 'calories from fat', 'calories from carbs' and 'calories from protein'. Since fat has a lot more calories than protein or carbs, it is easier than you think. Fitday.com will do the calculation of the ratios (based on calories, not weight) for you. Most of us aim for 65% calories from fat, 30% calories from protein and 5% calories from carbs daily, for induction.

I don't know much about Gout, so I'll leave that topic for someone else

Hi Alaskansonya, JulieB, liv and Greeneggs&ham,

Firstly, Let me apologise for not responding to your posts earlier. Thank you very much for your concern to help me. I want to provide a little bit more information about my Atkins journey.

2003: Did Atkins for six months when I was 280 pounds (127 Kilos) and lost 62 pounds (28 kilos) and quit with boredom of the food.

2003: half hearted attempts couple of times and quit during induction.

2007: Did Atkins for six months when I was 300 pounds (136 kilos) and lost 80 pounds (36 kilos) and quit with lack of commitment.

2008: Developed joint pains (hips, knees and ankles). Not severe but discomfort while walking. In few months time Gout attacked in my right leg big toe joint. Doctor put me on Allopurinal and Calgout tablets. Started eating gout friendly diet that is polar opposite of Atkins and gout has been controlled.

2009, Jun: I weighed 309 pounds (143 Kilos) and started Atkins inductions and sever gout attacked on the fourth day and I insisted for three more days and gout pains severed and had to quit.

2009, end of Jul: I weigh 309 pounds (143 kilos) and want to start Atkins again. Atkins is the only diet that worked effectively and I was never hungry and never craved for carbs, sweets and alcohol. I always felt hungry in other diets and hunger defeated me.

I am not looking for gout cure in general but thanks to all of you for suggesting various sources for information and I will definitely use them when I cannot do Atkins. I am seeking your help to do Atkins induction phase without flaring gout attacks.

Some other posts elsewhere on this board suggested to eat 70/20/10 fat/protein/carbs. I guess some of you suggested how to up the fat. I will prepare a notes with such food list and start Induction again.
I will do induction just for 14 days and move to the next stage to introduce little bit more veggies.

Thank you again for your help.

All the best of luck to you! I am sorry that you are going through this...My dad also prefers the atkins lifestyle but also has the gout so it makes it very difficult. I wish I knew a good answer for you...keep posting cause if you find a solution that seems to work, I would like to share it with my dad.
