  • After the Fat Fast, up the fat?

I am currently on day 2 of the Fat Fast. The merits of whether I should or should not be doing the Fat Fast have been debated, and ultimately I decided to do it. If you would like some insight into the Fat Fast from Dr. Salerno, who worked with Dr. Atkins, check out Jimmy Moore's pod cast from his blog, Livin' La Vida Low Carb Extending The Atkins Legacy With Dr. John Salerno (Episode 196) | The Livin La Vida Low-Carb Show

Now, I am wondering if anyone has had success with increasing the fat intake on Atkins, while decreasing the protein intake? After the Fat Fast, it's suggested that I should increase up to 1200 calories with the same 90% fat intake, and from there go back to induction while keeping my fat intake high. Does anyone have any experience with this? IAdditionally, I'm wondering if the Fat Fast also works with higher calories, just by increasing the fat and decreasing the protein?

Most people who do the Fat Fast don't do it again because they regain the water weight they lost and they feel physicially bad while they do it----probably due to the low cal aspect of it.

In my years here, there had been only 1 person who did Fat Fast periodically because she was on medications for her thyroid disease and other endocrine problems that she couldn't lose weight unless she did the Fat Fast periodically. Needless to say, she left the board about a year after I joined and I haven't seen her around here since, so I can't tell you what she did or currently does.

The only thing I can advise you is to try to get in touch with Jimmy Moore because he might be able to get you in touch with Dr. Salerno. If I were in your shoes, I would much rather get that information from someone like Dr. Salerno, since he has more experience with Fat Fast than we do.

Yes, I have noticed that people react to Fat Fast like it's Lord Voldermort...you know, "the name that must not be mentioned." But, I just wanted to see if anyone on this board had any experience with after the fat fast, or if just increasing the fat content of their daily intake was beneficial. I understand that people with gout might increase the fat content, so if that has also helped with fat loss, I'd like to hear about it.

And btw, I don't feel bad on the FF. Maybe a tad hungry...but it's hard to tell if I'm hungry, or just want something more to chew on. It has strangely zapped any sweet craving; I've really had them while on induction. I'm craving meat and salad, so I'll be happy to return to induction. And I'm finally seeing purple ketostix! You just don't know how much that has helped my psyche after weeks and weeks on induction. If nothing else, it has re-motivated me.

Norman gave an article on this.. see the Main form title Fat fast, but basically in a nutshell if this worked for you then you will want to increase the calories to 1,200 and eat 300 calorie meals 4 times a week and then go back to introduction... Just wanted to add as far as % is concerned there is NOTHING in DANDR that advises the exact % of fat, carb, and protein (except during the fat fast it should be 75%-90% fat) as far as I understand those #'s came as a guideline for people from the people here on ADBB! What I gather from the fat fast is you need more fat, less protein to loose weight. Hope that helps.

It is okay if it takes me a little longer to get there, besides this is where I'm going to stay forever and that is a really long time!!!

Not quite. It is not in DANDR, but a Duke (U?) study determined that by following the sample menus in DANDR, that is what the percentages work out to.

That's because Dr. ATkins gave exact guidelines on who is and who isn't a Fat Fast candidate in the book. As I wrote, there has only been 1 person in my time on ADBB who was a legitimate Fat Fast candidate because she had severe medical problems and was on medications that prevented weight loss. The others have been people who haven't been following the plan or who want to "speed" up their weight loss---in other words, for all the reasons that wouldn't make them Fat Fast candidates per Dr. Atkins.

So if you encounter any hesistancy to do Fat Fast here on ADBB it's because we only want you to try it if you are a legitimate Fat Fast candidate as outlined by Dr. Atkins in the book. Afterall, he did write that the Fat Fast can be dangerous for those people who don't need to do it. It's a health safety issue.
