Atkins Article : The Fat Fast

Counterintuitive as it may sound, if you can't budge the scale on Induction, a few days on this regimen may well allow you to break through metabolic resistance.

Certain individuals are so metabolically resistant that only more intense dietary restrictions prove successful. Once medications, thyroid problems and candida are brought under control, almost all overweight people who diligently adhere to the Atkins Nutritional Approach™ will lose and keep off weight. But for the small group of people for whom it does not work, more extreme measures are necessary.

To help these metabolically resistant people, Dr. Atkins has modified what he calls "the most effective weight-loss eating pattern ever described." British researchers Alan Kekwick and Gaston Pawan developed it, and Frederick Benoit and his team confirmed its superiority in burning off fat, compared to an absolute total fast. This extreme diet consists of 1,000 calories daily, comprised of 90 percent fat. No other weight-loss regimen has matched its ability to burn off stored fat. Dr. Atkins modified the Kekwick diet to make it as enjoyable as possible and dubbed it the "Fat Fast." He tried it on scores of patients and found it often worked for those who were unable to lose weight in any other safe, drug-free way.

    Re: Fat Fast

Fat fast kind of describes my last few years of eating and living before I went on Atkins - because I became fat fast
I was just wondering what exactly is the "Atkins Center"? A rival of the Atkins Nutritional people?

Just wanted to add that I just checked the "book" today and basically what Norman gave us is a recap of the DANDR pg 272-274 for reference. Someone, somewhere, on this board today was asking about the fat fast and what to do next, ect ... so hopefully she finds this!

Yes, that's why I posted this. Whiteisle was talking about Fat fast. I had no clue what she meant so I looked it up. I literally thought it meant to not eat fat and go on some high protein diet or something.

            Re: Fat Fast

I just wonder how many others will now think this is their only way to loose -- without giving the plan a fair shake first....I keep reading where the new members are on day 6 or 7 and are talking about "stalls" because they haven't lost X number of pounds in that many days......many of them have been on other diet before coming to Atkins -- you can't jump from diet to diet and expect large losses -- your body can't do it. I'm seeing people on the site that are expecting unrealistic losses in small amounts of time -- when it doesn't happen they start looking for some other way to do things.....either by a fat fast or South Beach, Weight Watchers, etc.

I don't loose quickly but have come to the realization that if I am careful what I eat and how much I eat to keep the loss continuing - I also know the medication I take causes slower loss -- I won't try something that Dr. Atkins (or anyone else) has suggested might be dangerous for you -- why would you put YOUR health at risk?

              Re: Fat Fast

I think you are right Carole. There are some warning signs posted with fat fast in the book. It is clearly explained who should do it and who should not (it is not meant to break stalls) and since we follow the book here we follow it when it comes to this part too. Hopefully everyone will have enough sense to make the right choice.
