  • First day on induction and have questions :)

    Hi everyone!

Today is my first day on induction, and I have a few questions to ask about..

1.) I didn't buy bacon or breakfast sausage because the only kind I could find had a form of sugar in them (dextrose, etc). What kind am I supposed to get?

2.) Am I allowed avocado on induction?

3.) I saw olives on the list..does this include avocado?

4.) What does everyone drink besides water? I used to drink Crystal lite, and don't believe I can.

5.)How does everyone count their 3 oz of cheese? It seems hard to know how much is 3 oz if I want to spread it out throughout the day

6.) I had a migraine today and felt sluggish and just wanted to sleep..is this normal?

Thank you so much for all your help!!!

Re: First day on induction and have questions

Keep looking for stuff without sugars. There are some brands a places where you can find it. Do a search on the forum - we have had some threads on sugarfree bacon lately.

You can have 1/2 avocado on induction
Olives can be had too yes
I drink water, water and water. Nothing better. Sometimes carbonated water. Get used to plain water it helps
If you buy cheese in 8oz blocks it is easy to divide these up in half and quarters so you know how much 4 oz is and can stay under. (But you do not have to eat cheese )
The beginning is a bit of a transition. It will pick up. Hang in there.

Welcome to the healthiest lifestle there is and to ADBB!

1.) I didn't buy bacon or breakfast sausage because the only kind I could find had a form of sugar in them (dextrose, etc). What kind am I supposed to get?
I don't eat alot of pork. You can certainly start a thread and ask folks what they buy.

2.) Am I allowed avocado on induction?
      You're allowed 1/2 avacado a day

3.) I saw olives on the list..does this include avocado?
You're allowed 10-20 olives a day, black or green.

4.) What does everyone drink besides water? I used to drink Crystal lite, and don't believe I can.
I drink water and lots of it. Nothing replaces water. Now that it's summer I like to have a glass of decaf ice tea or use my allowed 3 tablespoons of lemon juice and make a glass of lemon-ade. Remember though, you're allowed only three sweetners a day.
5.)How does everyone count their 3 oz of cheese? It seems hard to know how much is 3 oz if I want to spread it out throughout the day
Another way that you can't go wrong is to invest in a food scale. They are great for measuring your food.

6.) I had a migraine today and felt sluggish and just wanted to sleep..is this normal?
Yes, this is normal. It's all part of the detox. It's called Induction Flu here. Your body is ridding of all the simple carbs you were putting in your body. Mainly sugar. It will last anywhere from 24-72 hours. Just hang in there, take some pain killers if need be and make sure you drink plenty of water.
Thank you so much for all your help!!!

And you probably aren't going to unless you buy at Whole Foods or somewhere similar.

I'm down 42lbs and I eat bacon cured with sugar fairly frequently. I did it on induction. IMHO, don't sweat it if you can't find bacon not cured with sugar.

We have what is called cheese sticks. Don't know if all areas have those but they are packaged in 1 ounce sticks. So it takes the guess work out of how much you're eating.

With bacon, look for UNCURED bacon. Uncured means that the bacon hasn't been cured in the traditional way using sodium nitrate or sodium nitrite to preserve the pork and keep it pink or red. Instead, the uncured versions generally use salt, lactic acid starter culture and celery juice, which is loaded with natural sodium nitrate, to create the distinctive bacon flavor. The same method is used with "uncured" hot dogs and other meats.

Uncured bacon is more readily available in grocery stores nowadays. Hormel Natural Choice & Applegate Farms are two popular brands. If you have a Trader Joe's in your area, I've found their brand of uncured bacon to be the tastiest. None of the uncured bacon that I have seen contains any form of sugar.

Pancetta might be another option you might like. This is Italian "bacon" that has been salt cured and spiced rather than smoked. It is usually found vacuum packed near the deli area. I've never seen sugars as an ingredient.

Sausage can be more difficult. Jones is a popular brand that has many all natural choices that contain no sugars. These are usually in the frozen department. Sausage is easy to make with ground pork & spices. Here's a recipe from Linda's Low Carb for hot Italian sausage to give you an idea. You can adjust/change the spices (I don't use Splenda in mine) for different sausage types. Breakfast sausage would have sage, thyme & black pepper instead of the red pepper, fennel & garlic. You can cook the sausage loose or make it into patties or roll into little logs for links. HTH

Here in the southeast US, in addition to the brands already listed, I sometimes find Smithfield which has a "no sugar added" bacon. I agree that sausage is hard to find without sugar as a listed ingredient, but I will often purchase a meat item like bacon or sausage which lists a sugar (like dextrose) as an ingredient if it lists "0 sugar in nutrition info and the sugar is one of the last ingredients.

Along with many others here, I strongly recommend trying to do a water-only induction if for no other reason than to prove to yourself it can be done and to maximize results. After that, you can try Crystal Light or other artificially sweetened drinks if you found two week of water only to be too tough. If you're like me, you may decide that water isn't so bad and a diet soda can remain a rare treat.

I like the other options I've seen listed in prior posts on this thread. I have found that I can't stick to my limits on cheese though if I'm eating it as a snack. I have often found myself eating an entire 8 oz. block of cheese if I let myself go. Instead, I now try to use cheese only with a meal -- cheese on a hamburger or in a recipe -- rather than a standalone snack.

I was sluggish the first few days and then the energy hit about 4-5 days into Induction. It wasn't the kind of energy that made me want to run a marathon or start a high impact aerobic DVD, but I certainly had more pep in my step and was more focused at work, both mentally and physically.

*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily – www.fitday.com will help you keep track of this.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water -nothing added daily (Legal water is considered Filtered water, Mineral water, Spring water and Tap water).
*Take your supplements and start an exercise routine today.

The Atkins shakes and bars are not legal on induction – there are non-induction ingredients in them and they are not listed on the acceptable food list. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list it doesn’t belong in your mouth – no exceptions!

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

I cut cheese in 1 ounce portions and wrap it in saran wrap so I'm not eating more than allowed.

Water -- you can't find anything better to drink than that. It will keep your metabolism up plus it helps flush the nasties and fat out of your system. Crystal Light is made up of chemicals - your body doesn't need chemicals to survive - it isn't good for you so why bother?

Just to show you the ingredients in the Spring Water I drink daily has this: Ingredients: Water.
Here are the ingredient in the lemonade flavored crystal light:
                Ingredients
Citric Acid Provides Tartness , Potassium Citrate Controls acidity , Aspartame Sweetener , Maltodextrin From Corn, Magnesium Oixide Prevents Caking , Natural Flavor , Acesulfame Potassium Sweetner , Lemon Juice Solids , Artificial Color, Yellow 5 Lake , BHA Preserves Freshness , Phenylketonurics Contains Phenylalanine.

                See the difference?

I buy Plumrose bacon at Walmart - I have no problem with it. Also if you are going to use bacon bits in your eggs or on salads make sure you get real bacon pieces with no sugars added (Plumrose makes these also).

Don't eat the same things over and over - the recipe sites have great meal ideas and side dishes to keep from getting bored.

For the love of pete, I just bought yesterday bacon that had no sugar listed in the ingredients. I just went into my trash bin to get this information for you. It's Gwaltney Hardwood Smoked Premium Sliced Bacon.

                    The ingredients are as follows:
Cured with water, salt, Sodium Phosphates, Sodium Erythorbate and sodium nitrite.

Sodium Erythorbate empirical formula is C6-H7 Na+ O6-. It is the sodium salt of Erythorbic acid, or using UPAC nomenclature D-Araboascorbic acid. In other words, it's a stereo isomer of acorbic acid, Vitamin C. Since it's a potent antioxidant related to vitamin C it prevents pretty much the formation of carcinogemic nitosamines (1).

It's molecular structure is similar to cyclic ribose's. This stuff comes from sugar sources but it is not a sugar.

I get an 8oz block of cheese and use string to cut in halves until I have 8 1oz pieces. Don't get pre-shredded--it'll have potato starch in it.

I love cheese but I'm not that big of a cheese eater. I do love Aged Gouda but it can be a bit pricey. I stay away from cheese personally because I feel it produces a stall with me when I cycle down my diet for fat loss.

Maybe a food scale might help?
