I was under the impression that the limitation on sweeteners was due to the carb count. No??

No. The limit is 3 servings/packets regardless of the carb count.

Re: ever heard of this sweetener?

Just trying to understand, here. As I read Dr. Atkins' DANDR writing (2002), regarding sweeteners, the 3 packet a day limit on AF was for saccharin. On Pg. 28 he writes in refernce to saccharin: ". . .It can be safely consumed in moderation, meaning no more than three packets a day. . ." and this was because of potential health issues. The sweetener approved and used by Dr. Atkins was sucralose (Splenda), and on that he writes on Pg. 129, "Note that each packet of sugar substitute contains about 1 gram of carbohydrate, so don't forge to include the amount in your daily totals." (emphasis added). He does not make the same 3 package a day limit on Splenda, but wants consumers to be aware of the carb count if they use it.

I would think, therefore, that liquid sucralose, which has no carbs, or, for that matter, several of the new breeds of sugar alcohols, which also have no carbs and do not stress the digestive system, would be fine to use at will adhearing to Dr. Atkins' directive, again on pg. 128 "You must determine which artificial sweeteners agree with you,. . ."

Had the liquid sucralose or the new sugar slcohol sweeteners been available to Dr. Atkins in 2002, I believe he would have embraced them, as he was known to have a sweet tooth, and loved his ice cream!

It's the chapter I need to re-read, for sure!! But, that chapter is titled "A Regimen to Jump-Start Weight Loss." What I was referencing was the rules of induction, which does not put a limit on Splenda sweetener as long as it agrees with your body and you contine to lose. It's important to remember, however, that the majority of the 20 carb allotment while Induction are to be in the form of veggies and NOT powdered, 1 carb per packet Splenda. But liquid sucralose has no carbs, no blood sugar impact and is a good AS for use in a low carb life style, so, as long as it doesn't affect your lose, I still think it's O.K. for at will use.

Another question though. If you subscribe to the 3 packets of sweetener interpretation to include any type of sweetener as all you can use a day, when does that change? In pre-maintenance or maintenance, 'cause I don't remember seeing it increased or listed in any of the items you add as you go through the OWL Rungs?

                  The chapter deals with induction
And on pg 230 splenda and the limit of three is mentioned specifically (point 13)

Re: ever heard of this sweetener?

I re-read Chapter 18 - about half way through I remembered that this was the chapter written as an adjunct to Induction giving a weeks menu to be followed exactly as written to ensure a quick start (lose a few pounds before swimsuit weekend.) Several of the recipes, to be followed exactly had Atkins Bake Mix in them and at least one had nuts!

I do agree, Dr. Atkins did write in this chapter to limit Splenda (the packet kind) to 3 packs a day if you wanted to get into that swim suit. However, in the Induction chapter, Chapter 11, he did not limit Splenda, cautioning only to include the carbs in your count.

Still. . . . . the liquid form of Splenda has no bulker, and thus no carbs. . . so I believe that to be something different altogether!

Re: ever heard of this sweetener?

You're looking reasons to add more sweetener. Is that a good thing really? I think you are pushing it personally
In the new book written by the guys at the Atkins company (Heimowitz and Trager - Heimowitz worked with Atkins) called The All New Atkins Advantage they are still limiting the sweeteners to three. It is the rule on the board they are running. If you think you have found a loop hole - try and think about why you want a loop hole.

I love my bottle of syrup that has zero carbs but I know I want to be in control of our relationship

Re: ever heard of this sweetener?

Sorry, I thought it was just a friendly, let's get educated, "debate" about whether the limitations on sweeteners were because of the carb counts, or if Sweetzfree (or any liquid sweetener) is good for the Atkins WOL, I had hoped that we could all learn about liquid sweeteners and their place in Atkins, since they were not available when Dr. Atkins wrote the 2002 book. It's not a personal thing for me, I'm not much on sweets myself (salty, yup!) That being said, when I do use a sweetener it is in liquid form. It does save carbs!

I did not mean to be unfriendly. I apologize if I came across that way. I thought you were interested for personal reasons. I have no problem discussing and exploring scenarios though. Hope there are no hard feelings
I do agree about liquid sweeteners - better than the non liquid ones but sometimes harder to find. And I find that recipes are usually with splenda in hard form so I do keep some around.

No hard feelings here! I just didn't want you to misunderstand my reasonings. I do understand and try to follow the rules. But sometimes the book is like the law, open to too many interpretations! And it really didn't help that the suggested menus in Chapter 18 are so off plan. Where's that good 'ol proof reader when ya need 'em!!
