  • Meds & Atkins?

I read that meds can interfere with this diet and/or need to be adjusted. I'm currently taking Lipitor 10mg & gemfibrozil 600mg 2x/day for high cholesterol/high triglycerides and piroxicam 10mg for osteoarthritis and a low-dose aspirin 81mg for my heart I guess.

The cholesterol meds have brought those stats to a very good level and exercise has been helping w/the osteoarthritis in that I don't need to take the NSAID every day.

I plan to call my physician tomorrow about this issue but in past experience, doctors are quick to put you on meds but very resistant in taking you off or lowering dosages. However, I realize that playing around with these meds/dosages on my own could be dangerous.

I was wondering if anyone has started Atkins while taking any of these meds?

I don't see where the statins and NSAIDS will effect low carb eating.Your lipid profile should improve further down the road and arthritis might be a lot better with less stress on joints.Good chance they both can be stopped.Aspirin has nothing to do with how much you weigh.Good luck on your wt reduction.

Hi Mizski and good luck reaching your goals. I would be very prudent about changing your meds and would stick with what your physician recommends.

You are on some pretty strong medications, be careful and taper off under the supervision of your doctor.

If I were you, I'd wait until you had been on Atkins for at least six weeks before seeing your physician and telling him your health objectives. It usually takes at least that long for there to be changes in lipid profiles. In some people, the cholesterol readings get worse before they get better with Atkins. So don't change any medication until you have consulted with your physician. If you are not able to have a conversation with your physician, find a new physician with who you can easily communicate.

Personally, although I no longer take diabetic medications or insulin, nor do I take blood pressure medication any longer, I do continue a statin drug. My HDL and LDL are within normal healthy limits, but my doctor and I have discussed it and agreed that with my familial history, it is best to continue on a reduced doseage.
