    Re: Ideas to stay full

What about having breakfast an hour later? I found that if I ate immediately after getting up, there was too much time to lunch, but if I ate a little later, it all fit perfectly.
    Born 1967. 6' 1". Male.

Started Atkins 28th April, at 216 pounds. Met goal weight on 9th July, at 176 pounds. New goal is to become trimmer without losing weight.

      When I was 18 yrs old I weighed 185lbs.
Maybe 10% of that was fat. So lean body mass was 165lbs.
165 X .6 = 99gm of protein needed per day. Get enough so muscles don't get lost with the fat.

Cut out the oil and fats. You get enough with the protein meal.
Unfortunately, Atkins is a high fat diet. So eating a high protein diet isn't doing Atkins.

Cut the carbs down very low- say 10 per day.

You want to get your insulin low and keep it there. That is the secret to the Atken diet. Calorie control is next. But if the insulin is low then you can up the calories up a little. Then, like the Dr says increase the carbs 5 gm per week.
By eating more often you are putting in more food before you feel hunger. Keeps the metabolism rate up high. Getting hungry is going to slow it down. I may eat a little more in the morning and a little less in the afternoon so then the calorie count evens up. This calorie restriction is not my own idea. I picked it up from Dr Oz. He says you will live longer.

I'm down 10.5 lb in 8 days and not hungry. I have found a diet pepsi in between meals is a help.

Another thing. At the worst "It's only 2 hours till meal time".

Good luck comes to those who try
Unfortunately, I don't believe I can do this and still be doing Atkins.
And when you mentioned Dr Oz I KNEW I couldn't do it Thanks anyway for taking the time to answer.

I usually excersize right after I get up and then eat about 20 minutes later (so about 90 minutes after I get up). Today I did try to wait as long as I could before eating. I made it until about 9:00. I think that might have helped. Some mornings I'm hungrier then others when I wake.
          Thanks

That's right. When I stagger my calories I really stagger the fat %. I like to stay at 60% minimum. I might drop down to 52% but that's usually only twice weekly at most. That's what works best for me. I base my diet around red meat, fish, good fats and green, leafy veggies.

I know cream on induction is a legal food but after experimenting for a few months on the AD, I've noticed that cream has a tendency to stall my fat loss.

I know it should not, but so does bacon and eggs as a combo. With me, poached eggs seem to do best. I always make my meals a bit more fatty by using fish oil, EFA, flax and CLA. Again, I seem to do best by using fish oil and eating red salmon for lunch.

Your best bet is to stay with what's outlined in DANDR. Do exactly what the book recommends and do not consider doing your own "Frankensteinian" version of the diet that probably won't work.

OK, so you are going 13 hours without food... If you are insulin resistant your blood sugar may have dropped pretty low upon awakening.

You could try having an ounce of cheese before you go to bed at 9:00 to see if that has any effect...

Another option is to split your breakfast into 2 segments... have the eggs, and then when you get hungry again, have the bacon...

Basically having smaller portions before bed and again upon awakening...

                Yup!
That's what I've been doing. Sorry I gave the impression I was doing "my own version".
But I also believe that everyone is different and after being on Atkins as long as I have you really have to try to listen to your body and try to figure out what it's telling you.

Thanks, I did split my breakfast this morning and it did seem to help a bit. I'll try eating a little something before I go to bed also. I really don't like to eat anything before I work out so I'll probally still wait awhile in the morning before eating.

I never eat before my morning workout. I strength train 4 times per week and usually I split up training routines for legs and back. I'll train legs Tuesdays and Fridays in the morning, then back, biceps, traps and forearms in the late afternoon.
I like training on an empty stomach in the morning and possibly that can help release growth hormone.

So if you eat a meal with, for example, 12 grams protein, you can expect that 8 of those grams will be converted to sugar by your body. So that's the equivalent of 2 teaspoons of table sugar or about 8 cups of lettuce.
Not exactly. The 2/3 (or 57-58% as it often appears) came out from some calculations that didn't measure the impact of protein on blood glucose. What people said is "okay, protein can be converted to glucose and we all know that glucose raises blood sugar, so protein must raise blood sugar." Then almost a century ago, some folks calculated that each gram of nitrogen can produce 3.6 g of protein as a result of beef protein ingestion. Since beef protein is 16% nitrogen, that means every 6.25 g of beef protein will have 1 g of nitrogen. So 6.25 g of beef protein will go into 3.6 g of glucose or, in other words, every 100 g of beef protein will yield about 58 g of glucose. And according to the logic that was used, these 58 g of glucose will be released into the bloodstream and do their job just like any 58 g of glucose should. For some reason everyone liked this theory and it's still very popular today, despite the fact that studies done from the 1920s until now show that a protein meal has a significantly lower impact on blood sugar than predicted. For e.g., in a study where subjects with type 2 diabetes were fed with 50 g of protein, only 2 g of glucose were released into the bloodstream... although about 30 g should have been released according to the 58% figure; similar results were seen in non-diabetic subjects.

So if (and that's an "if" no one is yet sure about) 2/3 or so of protein are converted to glucose via gluconeogenesis, only a tiny amount seems to enter the bloodstream. Of course, if one keeps eating excess protein and more glucose accumulates than what is needed by those body parts lacking mitochondria, then the extra glucose might affect blood sugar. But in your example, a meal with 12 g of protein should not contribute with more than 1 g of glucose to one's blood sugar.

As long as I'm eating the Atkins way I don't get very hungry. I'm usually ready to eat in the morning first thing, but after that I could possibly go all day without eating. I don't go that long because I'm diabetic and it's just not good.

You will get hungry every few hours as your body is burning up what you eat. Try making some food that takes a while to cook to get your mind on the task. Also, fat keeps us full longer -- but if still have to remember to move around and exercise if we're taking too much in.

Try this. It's awesome (and can be made with turkey products). The version topped with an egg, without the bread, is perfect!
