  • Confused about Splenda

The box says zero carbs. Dr. Atkins little carb book says it has some carbs - maybe .4 or .6 per teaspoon - I don't remember.

Do I count the net carbs in Splenda? Is there a limit to how much of it you can have a day?

Yes, count 1 carb/serving and there is a limit of 3 servings of any artificial sweetener/day. That includes diet pop (1serving/8oz).

      Re: Confused about Splenda

What is a serving? One teaspoon?

I would like to make a dessert that is permitted by Atkins. I' looking at a recipie for a pie made mostly from a low carb chocolate bar (made w/ sugar alcohols), cream, and almond meal. The entire pie includes 1 cup of splenda. I'm thinking I have to cut the pie into a number of peices so that each peice does not have too much cream or too much splenda to eat in one day. I plan to eat one peice, and then freeze the rest of the peices separately and eat once in a while.

        Re: Confused about Splenda

Are you using the granular kind? That has 0.5 carbs per teaspoon.

1 tsp of granular Splenda has the sweetness of 1 tsp of sugar. One packet of Splenda has the sweetness of 2 tsp of sugar. If you are using granular Splenda, 3 packets of Splenda (which is the limit Dr. Atkins gave in DANDR) are equivalent to 6 tsp of granular Splenda.

        So, to summarize...
        • Splenda Granular is limited to 6 tsp per day and each teaspoon has 0.5 net carbs
        • Splenda packets are limited to 3 per day and each packet has 1 net carb

And yes, you should count every carb that goes into your mouth, no matter where it comes from (aliens... ).
        So what are you cooking?

Thanks Georgiana! That's just what I needed to know. I've never used splenda before, and want to try making something with it.

            Re: Confused about Splenda

But, if you use liquid Splenda, (Sucralose) there are no carbs. This does not, apparently, void the 3 servings of AF a day, but it will lower the carb count in your dessert in a major way since pourable Splenda is very high in carbs when used by the cup. And I can't imagine anyone (although it's probably been done) tearing open enough packets to make a cup or more!

              Re: Confused about Splenda

The splenda I bought came in a box - just like buying a box of brown sugar - only it was splenda. So it would be very easy to measure out a cup - no need to tear open little packtes. I'm assuming this the "granular" type. Is that right?

Does anyone know where to buy liquid splenda in the UK, by the way? I could only ever find the granular type.

                    Re: Confused about Splenda

As far as I know we can't buy it here

The one many people on ADBB buy is www.sweetzfree.com but they will not ship outside North America (I spent ages once waiting till their purchasing window opened, filled out an order, gave my card details for payment etc only to get an email a few days later saying they do not supply to UK and are not intending to do in the future )

I bought some from www.ahfni.com a year or so ago - the brand name is Quick Sweet - but it doesn't seem to be listed on their website at present.

However a quick google turned up this web page with it which has the same layout and 'style' as the ahfni website.

Maybe they have split off this product for some reason into a different company. They offer both liquid sucralose (3 drops=2 teaspoons of sugar) and pure sucralose powder, which you have to mix with water for use. It is too concentrated for normal use as one gram = 1.3 pounds of sugar!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
