I'm growing some sunflowers from seed. I'm so proud they didn't die and are actually starting to flower. My they are tall
Anyway, I was reading a bit about them and learned that you can make sunflower oil from the seeds. Anyone do this? It didn't say how.
Anyone have any other ideas on what to do with the seeds.
    Thanks,
    Susan

I don't know how to make the oil but that is the main oil that is used here in holland and I really like it. I also use sunflower oil shampoo and conditioner.

EAT THEM!!! It will take tons of seeds to make the oil anyway.

No idea how to make oil at home, but I use the seeds in salads. If I snack on them there is the risk I eat more than 1 oz.

            Re: Sunflowers

Aren't sunflowers great? I love how they turn to face the sun. And they ARE really tall!! I've never eaten the seeds, I let the birds have them...and boy, do they really LOVE them. Fun to watch too.

I never really thought of eating them. I guess I don't know how to make them go from the flower to what I got at my natural foods store. Please let us know how they are (and what you did with them). Thanks.

One of my favorite salad bars have sunflowers that I put on my salad. Never thought about doing it at home. That's one thing I'll do.
Do I need to do anything to them once I pick them before I use them. Like roasting them or something?

Thanks so much for that link. Sounds like I don't have the right kind of sunflowers for oil and it sounds like it'd be to complicated anyway

I can only find roasted in the grocery stores here, but when I visit my grandma I use them raw (I think they are slightly softer raw). My brother on the other hand hates raw sunflower seeds. I guess it's just a matter of taste.

At home, Mom sometimes makes sunflower seed crackers. I'll have to email her for the recipe though... never made it myself.

Thanks, Georgiana, I'll keep that in mind. I remember having sunflower seed crackers. Yummy. But they were quite carby.
