I think you have it Susie--Those that are conscientious about following a healthy, nutritionally complete vegetarian diet ARE probably slim and healthy. Those not minding nutrition or eating junk and calling it a vegetarian diet may not be either slim or healthy.

The same goes for any "proclaimed" style of eating. I don't consider someone who eats piles of protein and fats and sweeteners but few veggies to be doing Atkins either although they may proclaims such (and add to the Atkins bashing already out there)

Soy is a plant estrogen and has estrogen effects in humans when consumed. The natural forms of estrogen eaten in the soy foods that Asian kitchens use are perceived as less harmful than the soy products that are processed and added into so many packaged foods out there. Like anything else--the processing and alteration of the natural food has different effects on the body.

Soy is sometimes recommended to menopausal women to help with their symptoms as their own estrogen levels drop. Having said that, estrogen replacement therapy has side effects such as increases in breast cancer and the link between heavy use of soy products has also been linked to some of these same issues. There is good and bad to everything--you have to investigate and determine your own best course of action.

Soy is one of those things that has both positive and negative. Positive: is an estrogen, provides Omega 3s, low fat protein replacement

negatives: is an estrogen, may add to breast cancer risk,etc... you get my drift.

        - Eda mame - they eat for snacks with beer, and just anytime.
        - Tofu - this is a veeeeery japanese thing to eat, several of the most famous dishes in Japan are based on it (like Mabou Tofu).
        - Soy sauce -This is the #1 sauce used here. Used on sashimi, sushi, dumplings, and just about anything else you can think of.

So yeah, I am pretty taken aback by the comments linking soy to birth defects through some very very tenous perceived link.

in short soy is a toxic drug it is not a food and the only thing i can see it doing is maybe helping menopausal women but only if it was prepaird properly and had its toxins removed

I forgot to mention that nearly EVERY Japanese family drinks a soup made from soy EVERY morning - miso soup.

I'm sure you are right, it will have it's pros and cons, like any food. Which is why blanket statements like the one I quoted originally, do not help matters.

As you know, you have to be careful what you read, and where you read it.

I find it quite a coincidence that the anti-soy site you posted first, is based in New Zealand, a country whose dairy industry is one of their main industries.

As a whole, the New Zealand dairy industry produced 14.7 billion litres of milk in the 2005/2006 season from 3,832,145 cows in 11,883 herds. Over 1,267 million kilogrammes of milksolids were processed into products, mainly for export.
            (from this page)

There are as many cows in New Zealand as people. What I am alluding to is the possibility that with an industry producing over $20 billion dollars a year, they may have put up an anti-soy site to reduce the effect or soy consumption on reduced milk consumption.

But whatever, it's just an example. There is a lot of information and MISinformation out there.

I tend to take it all with a big grain of salt, but what I *believe* instead, is evidence, even supporting evidence.

I guess I'll just repeat that, the Japanese diet, which is widely known to be one of the healthiest on earth, also has one of the highest, if not THE highest concentrations of soy on earth.

Gee, you really got me started, and you know what, until I read your comment I'd been fairly neutral on soy, eaten some sometimes, but not a great deal. It's not like I'm a campaigner for the soy industry or something.

              Re: vegetarians all SLIM?

In regards to both vegetarians and vegans, I know many of each... some are EXTREMELY healthy and highly active, energetic, muscular and fit folks. Some others mean well but with busy lives, end up like many non-vegetarians... eating too many quick foods, junky carbs, fast food meals (fries, cheese and veggie sandwiches, bean burritos, chips, colas, veggie pizza, chocolate bars)... and end up chubby or outright fat just like a lot of non-vegetarians/non-vegans.

I have been mostly vegetarian in years past where I only ate probably 2 or 3 servings a week of beef/chicken/pork/fish and plus a few eggs. I did lose weight during that time period, slowly, but never made any progress after the first 40 to 50 pounds. Hovering above and just below 300 pounds, I was certainly not a skinny semi- vegetarian, LOL - and I also did NOT eat basically ANY of the carby junk foods or processed foods. I just ate too many carbs/calories from whole grains, fruits (whole fruits, not sugary juices), beans or other healthy food options. This apparently doesn't affect some people - but for me, it prevented me from reaching a normal weight. I will say I felt extremely healthy other than the extra 100 pounds I was still toting around.

you make a very good point mike hmm..

How Does Soy Cause A Toxic Colon

ok it seems the Japanese eat soy very differently check that link there its not to long

ok so japanese soy is made a speical way that takes the toxins out and such so then it might be ok to eat

japans fermented soy products like soy sauces, natto, tempeh may be safe to eat so you were right

but just about every other soy product like soy milk , soy lethicin , soy sauces and such is very dangerous and still has toxins

only the japanese make it a speical way that might be safe to eat but mostly everyone els makes it the wrong way even for soy sauces and such

Most of the commercial "soy" sauce sold in the United States is a non-fermented, synthetic product made from defatted soybean meal and grains, mixed with chemicals. A harmful group of chemical contaminants

anyways my advice is to completely avoid all soy
