  • suggestions for yogurt

Some one of the threads I have read were about a low carb yogurt. What brand would that be? I see hundreds of different kinds at the store but only the low fat, I could not find a low carb. I was hoping I could have something that would be on level 2 so I could have a surprise at night to ease my desire for a cheat.

I think you may be able to get Fage brand in the US. Look at the labels of any 'Greek style' or 'Balkan style' yogurts you find. The ones I get here, I can have about 100ml (about 3oz) for 5 carbs.

The greek yogurt I buy at Walmart is Oikos brand -- it has 6 carbs per serving for the plain. I started eating this when I got to the berry rung. I have a half container (3 carbs) and add a serving of berries to it...it's wonderful!!

        Re: suggestions for yogurt

I tried the Fage yogurt...I found it at a local store. Just be sure you get the plain kind that is full fat. I loved the consistancy of it but I found I had to add something to it for the taste. I thought I heard one of the brands had a "diabetic" version that was appropriate. I want to say it was dannon but I am not for certain. I have never seen it.

        Good luck.

          Re: suggestions for yogurt

I eat Dannon Light & Fit Carb & Sugar control - 3 carbs per serving. Since I'm on rung 4 - I mix it with real strawberries, whey protein and ice cubes for a yogurt smoothie...

              Re: suggestions for yogurt

Just check the ingredients in yogurt before buying (for things like fruits, starches, etc.) and, if it's a sweetened yogurt, remember to count it towards your max. 3 daily sweeteners.

These yogurts of so full of chemicals, starches, asparatame, sucralose, sometimes ACE-K, pectin, gelatin and other ingredients difficult to pronounce. True, they have some milk/cream and they add a few active cultures but this is NOT what yogurt is. These products are mere puddings with a few active cultures added.

I am very passionate about eating whole foods as much as possible. And I know many of us are here to lose weight but shouldn't we be doing it in a healthy way? Sure the Dannon Carb Control has only a few carbs but it's junk.

If you haven't tried real yogurt or Greek yogurt, please make an effort to do so. My favorite is FAGE. It is thick and creamy like sour cream. You can cook with it (full fat version) without it breaking.

                The ingredients are:
                • Milk
                • Cream
                • Live yogurt cultures

That's it...nothing else. Imagine that? Real food!!!

A 7 oz. cup of FAGE Total contains 260 calories, 20g fat, 14g protein, 6g carbs and 20% DV of calcium. Other Greek yogurts have similar stats. So, for 3g more carbs I would definitely go with real food.

Use it as a veggie dip or mix in some berries or fruit (when you are on those rungs) and you have a substantial meal with real nutrients. Use it in place of sour cream for a wonderful topping or ingredient with terrific nutritional benefits.

p.s. Greek-style yogurt is often the pudding-style chemical version that is simply strained. It is NOT the same thing. Check the label...if it has pectin, gelatin, starch and/or other ingredients, it is not Greek yogurt.

                I'll get off my now.

I am very partial to FAGE! But only the full-fat, 17.6-oz variety.

To determine where it is available in your area: call around your local health food stores to check whether they carry it. If not, as with any product, you can always special-order it with management. You'll love this yogurt.

I buy plain whole milk yogurt. National brands like Dannon, Stony Field Farms and occasionally grocery store brands offer it. They are typically 12-16 net carbs per 8 ounces. So 1/2 cup has about 6- 8 net carbs. Plus, I can't find a greek style yogurt that isn't low fat or non-fat. Anyhow, for me it's worth it because 1. I don't have to eat a huge amount of yogurt (1/2 cup is plenty for me!) 2. I can use the plain yogurt in other preparations like a meat marinade or in side dishes, 3. it's less expensive to buy it in a largish tub than in smaller individual servings.

Just remember, if the yogurt if flavored with fruit, it isn't legal until you get to that Carb. LAdder rung. For example, strawbery yogurt isn't allowed until you get to the Berry Rung. Peach yogurt isn't allowed until you get to the Other Fruit Rung.
