  • pLeAsE hElP! i HaVe A cHeAtInG pRoBlEm!

    Please Help Me! I am restarting Atkins, but I keep cheating I live with my mom, dad, and two brothers. My mom is always buying tastey junk food because that is practically ALL my brothers eat. I want to break away from this unhealthy eating habit. I NEED to lose weight. I know Atkins works, but I am having a rough patch and I am having a hard time completing one day If anyone has any ideas of how I can overcome this problem, please speak up I also cannot exercise because I badly broke my ankle and I am stuck on crutches. I used to have VERY toned calves, but my leg with the broken ankle has just turned into Jell-O Please give some suggestions on how I can not give into the temptations of carb-filled foods (and getting rid of them is not an option because of my brothers). Thank you !

    Have you tried doing upper-body exercises? You should be able to do SOMETHING, even if you have to do it sitting down.

    No one can motivate you...but you. It is about how much you want it. We are all surrounded by junk-food every day (My co-worker walked in with a bag of cheezies as I was typing this, the guy behind me has popcorn twists on his desk...) You have to decide if you want the weight loss or the junk food. I bet the weight loss would be way more satisfying

      You could do free weights ( or cans of veggies ) while sitting down. At the very least you'll be moving and you can work on your upper body while your ankle heals. (You could look up excercises on youtube if you don't have any videos)

      I have a hubby and daughter who very much love macoroni and cheese, hot dogs, "regular" food. I cook for them the same as I usually do, and I've learned not to even so much as lick my fingers. You CAN have the willpower to resist the junk, you just have to make the choice and do it. Does your family know you're doing Atkins? Ask them to help you out. They might be happy to help.

      Believe me, I've been overweight since I was small--getting rid of the weight and bad eating habits at a young age will be so great for you!

        Since you are 15 years old, you shouldn't be doing an adult weight loss diet like Atkins. because you have different nutritional needs than us old folks.

        there is a low carb diet specifically for teens, like yourself. It is found in a book called Feed Your Kids Well by Fred Pescatore, MD. Dr. Pescatore was the associate medical director of the Atkins Center during the 1990s.

        You and your parents should sit down and read that book. Then your parents will be able to grocery shop for you and buy you appropriate foods.

          O' Ashley, You remind me of a time that I lived at home and was trying to diet. I remember counting all the junk in the house as if it was yesterday.. .like 2 bags of potato chips, 3 kinds of Little DEVIL (I mean little Debbie snack cakes), a bag of chocolate chip cookies, a bag of double stuff oreos, and some pudding cups, not counting the sugary cereal or anything else. I remember then wanting to scream and valued to never be like that.

          I have been married and living in my own house for over 6 years and to this day, we do not keep junk in the house. Time to time I may buy a pint of icecream for the girls or something like this. I only have chips and cookies when my mom comes for a visit, and I only have soda when we have guest for dinner.

          Now, you would think I would be skinny by now.. the answer is no. Truth being. It was easy to blame it on my mom for tempting me or "making me feel the need to cheat", however, it still comes down to being responsible for what you put in your mouth. Even to this day, I struggle with it. Some days are great and others I just fight, and few are far between I give in. One day I'll keep wanting it bad enough and those "little voices" that say eat me will go away.

          The only advise I can give is this:
          1) Make sure your family is supporting the idea and you have available food around... meat, deviled eggs, veggies ~ pumpkin is a great snack, some fresh cut veggies to grab and munch on.
          2) Really see why you want to do Atkins, it has to be internal. It can't be for your friends at school, for the boy you have a crush on, or so people don't call you names. It has to be from deep down inside of you. For your health, for your peace of mind, and to take care of you.
          3) As for exercise, you can use hand weights and other things. Plus, the diet is 70% the weight loss, and give it time. You will one day realize in life there is all kinds of bumps in the road that slows us down, and the only thing you can do is slow down and cross over it... if you hit a speed bump in the road to hard, it will just destroy your car. Each thing takes time, so let your leg heel and give it time. (Sorry by the way for a broken bone, kinda jealous b/c I always wanted and even tried to break my bones so I could have a cast for all my friends to sign.. never happened!!!)

            Thanks for the support. I know I can do Atkins, I've lost 34 LBs on it before. I don't know why, but I am having the hardest time restarting. My family knows I'm doing Atkins, but they are not supportive of me. They all think I am going to quit and just give up, but I want to prove I can do Atkins again. I don't have enough money to buy free-weights, but I like the veggie can idea I will also check on youtube, the only exercise video I own is a few Tae-Bo videos, but they won't do any good right now. Thanks again!

            There are well over 40 pudding cups, 20 912 liter)soda bottles, all types of Little Debbie snacks, over ten chip bags, 7 half gallon ice cream cartons (my favorite), and baked goods in my kitchen right now. It is so unhealthy. I am going to try and go cheat free tomarrow ( a mini-goal for myself)

              Why doesn't your mother support you doing Atkins if she has lost weight on Atkins? You never answer when people ask you.

                She doesn't believe that I can do Atkins, so she complains about it and then makes a carb loaded meal and get really angrey that I won't eat it and that I have a salad or something else instead. Sorry, I thought I had answered that in my last post.

                  There are a lot of free exercise demos and little workout videos on SparkPeople. If you set up a fitness profile, they even design strength training workout routines. You can customize them too and just sub upper body for lower right now. Lots of good articles, health stuff, special interest SparkTeams, menu trackers, etc. SparkPeople is free.

                        Sorry this may have been asked or discussed already, but is your Mom overweight? If not, how come, does she not eat any of the things? If so, then how about you approach it different and try to get her on board with you. Try to explain how you guys could get in shape together... just a suggestion..

                          Thanks! My mom has been doing Atkins since Feb. She has lost over 60LBs now. I tried talking to her, but she never wants to listen to what I have to say. She complains that I am overwight, but when I try to fix the problem she complains again that I won't stick to Atkins (which I have proved before that I can) and that I don't eat the bread and pasta and other carb filled foods. It is like I cannot do anything right by her standards. And my dad only comes and stays here every few months, so he has no real say-so (he was transferred by his job and my family will move there when we sell our house).

                            its hard, but if you can stay on it for a few days and you go into ketosis
                            you wont be hungry
                            and when you feel like cheating, drink 2 glasses of water, and see if you still want it, if you still do, make a atkins approved snack

                              Go to your room, shut your door and do the Tae Bo video without moving your lower body by sitting in a chair. It will elevate your heart rate and give you a workout.

                              Can't you have a heart to heart conversation with your mother and tell her that you are miserable at your current weight. Tell her you just want a chance to succeed at good health.
