  • Question about fat loss

    Hi,
New to the board! Quick info about me. I am 5ft 8, 190. I was 206 when i started Atkins 2 1/2 weeks ago. Im 41 and an avid weightlifter.

In the past i was able to lose bodyfat eating chicken, fish, rice etc.. but this year i struggled so i thought i would try Atkins. Thought maybe i have become a bit carb sensative.

Ive been in Keto for the last 13 days. I do weights/cardio for 45 minutes 4x a week. My heart rate is between 115 and 150 bps.

I have lost 16 pounds but none of that weight around my waistline. Is it normal to initially lose water only then fat?

    Thank you!

    Re: Question about fat loss

Yes, you're losing water as your muscles use up their glycogen stores. What's up for debate is how much of the initial loss is water vs. how much is fat.

        Congrats for the 16 lbs!

Just because you haven't lost weight around your waist, it does not mean you lost "water only" for the past 2-1/2 weeks. Yes, some of the water lost is definitely water, but if you did the diet correctly, you certainly lost some fat too.

Did you take body measurements in more than one spot? Sometimes weight comes off from places we would not expect (neck, wrists, etc.) and not necessarily from the places where we would like/need to lose most weight (in your case, waist).

As I said above, one does not lose "water only", as the OP wrote.

From DANDR 2002, Chapter 9, Fallacy #3 (emphasis is mine):
It is typical of any weight loss plan, including the Induction phase of Atkins, that during the first few days, or even the first week, some of the weight loss will be water loss. However, when you follow a controlled-carbohydrate eating plan, your body switches from burning carbohydrate to burning stored fat for energy, resulting in the loss of stored fat. In fact, research shows that even when water is lost during the first few days on a controlled-carbohydrate nutritional approach, the water balance soon returns to normal, and the weight loss comes from burning body fat for energy. The most dramatic sign of this loss is seeing the inches drop off your measurements.
Volek et al. 2002 did an experiment to see how body composition changes after 3 and 6 weeks on Atkins Induction (plus nuts/seeds and protein powder). Their study used normal-weight male subjects, but it's clear from the results that one does not lose only water (and this even when one starts at a normal, healthy weight). After week 3, which is pretty much where the OP is, the subjects lost, on average, 1.7 kg (3.7 lbs) of body fat out of 2.2 kg (4.8 lbs) of total weight lost. So approx. 77% of the weight lost at the end of week 3 was fat.

            Re: Question about fat loss

Well yes, i have lost in various places but i know alot of it is water. I tried atkins as an experiment after 4th of July to see if i would like it and to see if it worked. I did it for 12 days and lost an inch around my waist.

The only thing i did differently is i had 2oz of wine a couple nights a week and i ate peanuts but i think more importantly, i did this later in the evening which i did not do when i lost the inch.

I am hoping those 3 variations are it so i am in day 3 of what i did last month. I have been in keto so i figured i was losing fat but i dont have alot of fat with the exception of my mid section..

Wine and nuts are not allowed on Induction. The only foods you should be eating are those on the acceptable food list.

Fat, midsection, wine. Yeah - I have that correlation going on too.

                  Re: Question about fat loss

hows your muscles doing? after the first week on atkins your insulin receptors on your muscles should become much more senseitive and thus absorb glucose much better and you will have just as good or most likely better work outs than when you ate high carbs

that is as long as you dont cheat if you cheat then your muscles insulin receptors may take awhile to turn senseitive
