  • Dehydration, Induction flu, or virus?

I am on Day 4 of induction and I have been doing very well. So far I have lost 4 pounds and my ketostix said that I am beginning to enter ketosis. However, beginning last night and all through today I feel like I have come down with a stomach bug/norovirus. I have done Atkins in the past, and I never remembered the induction flu feeling like this. I'm having waves of nausea, headaches, and a bit of dizziness. I think this could possibly be a real illness (although I'm not sure that it's common to catch a norovirus in the summer?). I am wondering if maybe it could be because I just began a menstrual period along with the induction flu...it isn't fun..

Also, I am guilty of not drinking nearly enough water...could this possibly be the reason for my nausea and dizziness? I just couldn't stomach any food today and the only thing I could think of that would soothe me would be to nibble on some saltines. I know that crackers are obviously not allowed at all, but I'm not sure what else to do. If I were to eat a few would I totally ruin all of the work I have done so far? Also, what if it really is just dehydration so then I would be eating those for nothing? I am drinking water right now in hopes that I'll feel better. This may seem like a silly question but I feel so ill and uncomfortable! Has anyone else become dehydrated on the diet and felt like this or do you think I really do have a bug? I really really hate being sick, as I am a huge emetophobic. I hope maybe some of your knowledge can enlighten me and calm me down a bit.

You should be drinking a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water daily -- nothing added. The nausea and dizziness could be from not drinking enough. Eat a few veggies in place of the saltines - dip them in some type of fat to get your energy up.

When I started in keotsis I was sick to my stomach, felt like I was going to throw up and had a massive headache....I persevered through it by eating small meals closer together and drinking water (I drink between 120 and 150oz daily)...withing a couple days all the symptoms passed.

If you aren't willing to drink the water you need each day, then this diet is probably not for you. Dehydration will definitely cause you to be dizzy and nauseous. I suffered from induction flu with severe headaches from day 3 to day 5. I powered through and by day 6 I felt great. For Atkins to work and to be a healthy way of eating it needs to be done exactly by the book. Hang in there!!

Induction flue it sounds like. Don't let it trick you into crackers. Bad idea. Work on that water. Just work on it. On Atkins we ask our kidneys to do a lot of work and we need water to help the process so keep drinking.
Hope you are feeling better today

Thanks. I feel great today! I drank as much water and I possibly could and I woke up feeling much better. I think I'm just about over the induction flu so I'm relieved, and I'm also glad that I didn't have any crackers! It feels good to be back on track...
