    Atkins Diet - Vitacost

    What do the critics say?

    Critics also express concern about the impact of the Atkins Diet on the overall health of the dieter. Depending on the foods chosen by the dieter, the diet may contain a large amount of saturated fat and cholesterol, putting those at risk for heart disease in danger. Recent research has found that high-protein diets speed up the progression of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), the main cause of heart attacks. Moreover, contrary to Atkins’ claims, extremely low-fat diets have been found to partially reverse heart disease. In addition, the lack of grains, fruits, and vegetables in the Atkins Diet may lead to deficiencies of key nutrients, including dietary fiber, vitamin C, folic acid, and several minerals. Finally, high protein diets may increase the risk of osteoporosis and accelerate the rate of deterioration in kidney function associated with aging.

    Dr. Atkins was a cardiologist -- I don't think he designed a diet to make our hearts unhealthy. We are to take a good multivitamin to keep our bodies healthy - we are encouraged to eat whole foods, not processed foods - so we get less of the toxins and crap (sodium, sugars, etc) processors put into foods.

    Many of the naysayers don't have a good grasp on the real Atkins diet - we Atkins is not High protein -- it is moderate protein high fat -- the "fat" i use is mostly is Olive Oil -- something most doctors (and naysayers) out there are telling everyone to eat.

    We also add back foods to our diet (grains,fruits, dairy), in a slow progression so we know what does and doesn't work with our systems to keep the weight off.

    I don't agree with the paragraph you posted. I've seen these types of articles around -- pose the question to some of the people who have following Atkins for several years - lost over 100 pounds and kept it off several years -- there are many here -- ask how unhealthy they are now.

      I agree with Carole.

      I have also read many articles about Atkins and how it is a deadly diet.

      In my own opinion all of that is just bullhockey. I believe Atkins and all round low carbing is the way to go. I feel so much better since starting this WOE. My heart seems to still be ticking, and my over all health seems to be getting better.

      People fear what they do not understand.

        everything there is complete crap not true in any way

        besides the high protein if they ment a super insain high protein and super low fat diet then ya that would be bad

        but atkins is high fat , medium protein , low carb

        and saturated fat and cholesterol is healthy the cholesterol in eggs makes your cholesterol better and the whole saturated fat being bad for you is a complete lie

        although saturated fat may back fire on your body a little if you eat it with insainly high amounts of carbohydrates so i guess thats where they get there crazy ideas but the thing is you need saturated fat to survive it is very healthy for you and alot of things in your body back fire on you when you eat insain amounts of carbohydrates

        the scientific requirement for carbohydrates in a persons diet is 0 you dont need to eat them to live though its annoying geting all your vitamins and minerals from just animal organs and bone marrow and prob not possible in most societys today so a normal natural amount of carbs from vegetables and such is perfectly fine

        the atkins diet ratios in the 3 macro nutrients are great imo its keept natural to what you would find in nature
