  • SPLENDA - Is this right?

I was reading about sweetners and found this about SPLENDA. Can anyone confirm? I thought Atkins encouraged the use of Splenda as a sweetner?
    Thanks

Hi! Last night I read that 7 packets of splenda can destroy 50% of good bacteria in your digestive tract. Also, it can interfere with the absortion of some prescription drugs. So, for anyone with ibs or the like be careful.

Dr. Atkins wrote there are 3 recommended artificial sweeteners: sucralose (Splenda), Ace-K, and saccharin. Saccharin has a bad rep because in the 70s there was concern that it produced cancer, so some people are hesitant to use it still. Ace-K isn't easy to find. And Splenda was the newest artifical sweetener on the market when the book was written.

There was a study published a year ago (sponsored by the sugar manufactures) that did suggest splenda in large doses could have this effect. They did the experiment on animals. I shrugged my shoulders about it. As I thought if the only bad thing they could find was that a huge amount of splenda had this effect - it is likely pretty safe. And the study did not do the same experiment with just sugar - who knows what just sugar would cause.
But if you like Stevia - you can try it. More natural (although I am sure if you did loads of it something may be bothered)

So, to answer my question, not2late, is it ok for me to be concerned about what I'm hearing about Splenda??

I think you forgot cyclamate, which is often used in Europe.

Currently, there is no human study proving adverse effects of Splenda when used in moderation (for e.g., 3 packets per day). On the other hand, there is also very few independent studies proving it's safety and none of the existing studies was done on long-term. So in the end, how much Splenda you consume or whether you consume any is a decision you need to make for yourself. But after you stop eating sweeteners for a while, you will notice many things taste naturally sweet and many desserts (which should be eaten only occasionally!) can be made with no sweetener at all.

on Atkins the max amount of artificial sweeteners is 3 servings daily, which is well below the 7 packets the study mentions.

But it's really up to you, whether or not you want to use artificial sweeteners. I use them on the rare occasion because they are "artificial" and I don't like exposing my body to "artificial" foods.
