  • Why Why Why!!!! I just want to know WHy!!!!!

Ok so ive read DANDR up to the 200's in pages. And im still confused about two things. Why in the world am I restricted to 3 cups of loosely packed lettuce when its only like 1 carb per cup??? Why????

And why cant I do induction for 4 days or however long it takes to get into ketosis and then go on rung 1 and stay on there till I lose weight??? I dont want the diuretic effect or whatever. I LOVE my vegtebles, I really dont like that I only get three cups of these!!! and loosely packed at that.

    *deep breath*

Ok sorry about that rant I just want to know these thigns because im confused. And why can I just start on rung 1??? wont I still be in ketosis still???

You can eat denser vegetables if you want
I think one reason why - is that we need to learn portion control. And we start by controling portions on things that are somewhat foregiving - like lettuce. But sooner or later we may want to eat oats and it is not going to be forgiving. So restricting portions is (in my opinion) one of the most important lessons to start to learn from induction.

But I hear you!!! And really 14 days is not that long. And there will come a day where you may say "Oh I wish everything was no nice and uncoplicated as it was in induction"
    Hang in there!!!!!

Lettuce is only 1 of the 20 or so veggies on the "salad" list. So, since you like veggies, try the other "salad" veggies, instead.

I dont want the diuretic effect or whatever.
Ketosis a natural diuretic. If you don't want a diuretic effect, then don't go into ketosis. so perhaps, Atkins might not be the right diet for you because Atkins relies on ketosis.

          *SIGH*

Thanx for the advice everyone. I mean its not that I dont want to be in ketosis im just thinking about how I dont care about the water weight that comes with induction. But I DO need to learn portion control. I do eat other starchy veggies though! I will hang in there. Thanks late, liv and sheila(I love your site btw).

I hear you. I've been doing this for 5ish months...and still struggle with portion control daily. I think I need to get smaller plates!

you're one of the lucky ones, Sheila. We've had members who couldn't eat veggies like celery, because it caused blood sugar instability problems.

Re: Why Why Why!!!! I just want to know WHy!!!!!

on induction i was no good at portion control but also my stomach IBS and such was damaged so i was extra extra hungry all the time but the Atkins diet cured all my life threatning stomach illnesses

and for vegetables i ended up mostly only eating broccoli during induction cause that was one of the vegetables i could eat as much as i wanted cause its so low in net carbs

At 3 total grams of carbs per 3.8 ounces? For what it's worth, as far as individuals go who don't report any effort-hindering health issues or sabotaging medications, stalls from non-starchy vegetables isn't something I've ever encountered in the past 8 years of helping those experiencing a weight loss standstill clean up their menus. Invariably, the culprit is something else not in accordance with Atkins - and once said culprit is extracted from the menu, losses resume. I've never seen a menu I couldn't fix - and not once in my experience has a healthy, medication-free individual's lack of losses been due to a non-starchy vegetable like lettuce, cucumbers ... or celery.

You might want to read 2big's ADBB threads about her struggles with celery. You know as well as I that 2big was very precise about the foods she ate--their quantities and how they affected her. I remember she tried unsuccessfully to reintroduce celery during her OWL and Pre-Maintenance (after her thyroid problem was under control) because celery was a problem food for her during Induction.

I admit, the non-starchy veggies typically don't cause problems, but it happens. I figure Dr. Atkins had enough prior experience with these rare exceptions during the course of 30+ years, that he limited the veggie servings for a reason.
