Re: When Can You Have Whey Protein?

thx mizski ~ i hear people talking about protein shakes all the time, but I don't really know why they drink them, LOL. Is it just a way to get additional protein w/o fat or carbs?

Re: When Can You Have Whey Protein?

Whey protein is an extremely easily digestable protein. As caregiver to my parents, I used to make them whey protein smoothies to supplement their diet which was too low in protein. Bodybuilders use protein shakes a lot to up their protein without a lot of calories and fat. I think that is where the popularity of them originated. Then the diet world got a hold of them and use them for meal replacements or calorie-controlled snacks. This is where (IMO) things started to go wrong as many people started to rely on protein shakes that were filled with all kinds of chemicals in them as an important food source.

With the Atkins diet we already get enough protein from our regular meals so care must be taken when using something like whey protein so you're not going way overboard protein-wise.

I think using a natural whey protein powder is best and then adding ingredients to it rather than buying the pre-flavored, pre-sweetened ones. For instance, several times a week I make a whey protein shake for breakfast. I am now in the berry rung so it is usually a combination of whey protein powder, water, 1 TBS of cream (for fat), 1/3 c. frozen blueberries (from blueberry season earlier this summer) and a pinch of stevia. I also add 1 tsp of FiberSure. Other fruits work well too when you are in those rungs but right now I just have blueberries. There are a lot of recipes available to make your own flavors: sometimes I use decaf coffee instead of water (no blueberries) or add a little vanilla or other flavor extract or 100% cocoa powder and/or cinnamon for a different flavor. For those who use SF syrups such as DaVinci or Capella flavor drops, there are a ton of flavor options.

As pipee_pl pointed out, it is not a true whole food but it is much more natural than the flavored or prepared versions. As I mentioned earlier, whey protein is recommended by my doctor for medical reasons but for most it offers a protein alternative that can be made healthy.

I make protein shakes quite often. I usually use Jay Robb protien powder. I also add two raw eggs to it. I read up on raw eggs and they are a very healthy way to go. But I do get fresh eggs from a farm.
I started using it for breakfast just for something different.

Whey protein is a pure, natural, high quality protein from cow's milk. Milk has two proteins: Casein (approximately 80%) and Whey Protein (approximately 20%).

Whey protein is a high quality, complete protein, with all the essential amino acids and is also the richest known source of naturally occurring branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine).

Unfortunately some companies have used whey protein as an ingredient for their frankenfoods by adding artificial flavorings and sweeteners and other ingredients.

Per my doctor's recommendation, I use ImmunoPro Rx Non-Denatured Whey Protein Powder. Ingredients: Whey Protein Concentrate...nothing else!

That looks like a really good product. I love whey powder myself I use it a lot on OWL. Do you have to order it online

I've never seen it in stores anywhere and have always ordered it online. My urologist suggested the evenbetternow.com site for some supplements I need (I have IC) and so I order from them although I think evolutionhealth.com is the primary supplier.

A note about this product: it is not the typical high-protein whey powder. It is fairly low in protein (4g/serving) and extremely neutral in flavor and quick dissolving. In fact you can even put a little on your tongue it it dissolves immediately. Try that with regular whey protein! Not so good. If you scroll down to almost the bottom of the evenbetternow page, it gives suggest uses. It's main use is as a supplement although I have used it to make shakes for an early morning breakfast. Most often I have it plain for a snack.
