  • Is it true that the weight lost during induction is only water weight?

Is this true, or just a myth? I'm wondering because I am about to start my second week on induction, and even though I've lost 8 pounds so far, I honestly can't see a difference im my physical appearance. Is this normal?

It is water that is incorporated in storing sugar in your body. You use up these glycogen stores whic gets rid of the incorporated water but at the same tim eyou are also losing fat. The best that you can hope to lose long term on this or any diet is 2 to 3 pounds aweek, so do not expext to lose 8 pounds every week or any week for that matter after the first week. Most people are lucky to lose 2 or 3 pounds the second week and after taht your average will be about 2 pounds a week/

What Mel said. The weight we lose after the first week is primarily fat. Don't go by "looks" to evaluate your weight loss. Many of us have fat goggles on and don't see ourselves smaller. Take body measurements instead.

Congrats for the 8 lbs! Those are 8 lbs you don't have to carry around. Pick an 8 lbs bag of something and carry it all day or exercise with it; you'll see what a difference putting it down makes.

8 lbs is 8 lbs regardless of it being water, fat or turkey feathers.

That 8lbs came from somewhere. So, even if you're not seeing it, it's happening.

Not at all. I have three sets of photos: before Atkins, week one of induction, and week two of induction. Throughout induction, my stomach has shrunk a considerable amount. I might post these photos for proof.

The first 3 to 5 lbs is probably water weight... Your body MUST get rid of this water weight before it can start losing the fat... From here on out as long as you stay on plan, any weight lost will most likely be fat...

From the book: "On any weight loss program, the first weight lost is water weight. Atkins is a particularly effective diuretic, so the water weight tends to come off fast on my program. But be assured that after four to five days, the pounds that come off are primarily fat." Pg 142

I don't care where the weight comes from as long as it's gone! Hang in there!

I agree, 8lbs gone is 8lbs gone. And in a short amount of time you will notice the difference, and so will others around you. Keep at it, it will be well worth it! I look forward to seeing your progress!

It can stink when the weightloss slows down. Or if you eat off plan and some water piles back on. So do be aware that eating off plan will not only add fat but water and the water will pile on overnight. 1 to 3 pounds a week is safe weightloss. Yes its slow, but is slow on any healthy diet. One of the things you are doing as it slowly comes off is building healthy eating habits that can last a lifetime! It took me a long time to loose my weight, I had ups and downs. But I eat so much differently from how I did before I started. There was Chinese Buffets before, now never! I am feeling like I won't need to worry about gaining it back because I've changed what I eat and how much I eat. At first I was gonna loose x amount of pounds be done in x-amount of time and go right back to my bad habits. It didn't happen. I cheated, I gave up, I restarted and time marched on. Only because it took me longer did I get to make real lasting changes in the way I eat. Also I stop loosing for a little while after induction then whoose off more water weight suddenly, like 4 pounds in two days. So don't give up if the weightloss doesn't show up on time, it probably is happening.

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

                        1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
                        2nd mini goal: 140!
                        3rd mini goal:135!
                        4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.
