  • Low fat low carb?

Ok so i re read the book again and like i know you're supposed to eat lots of fat here to satisfy your hunger and everything, but i was wondering... just wondering; if you do a low carb low fat diet wouldn't you lose more and faster?

I mean of course you'd be hungry and it would mean a bigger effort but wouldn't you lose faster because you will be in ketosis and not consuming as much fat so your body would start burning what you already have stored.

    Just wondering
You're all dkjhfkjhajfk amazing and make my heart go all happy haha.

    Re: Low fat low carb?

Atkins Nutritionals actually has a good write-up on this, and summarizes it nicely:

Fat is the mechanism that makes controlled carbohydrate weight loss work. The Atkins Nutritional Approach teaches you how to use fat to your advantage. When you are doing Atkins, fat is your friend not only because it is satiating but because it slows down the release of glucose into the blood. By moderating blood sugar swings, fat reduces carbohydrate cravings. Dietary fat, in combination with controlled carbohydrate consumption, accelerates the burning of stored body fat. When your body uses fat, rather than glucose for fuel, the metabolic process is called lipolysis. Eating fat accelerates the burning of fat, dietary and stored.

Unrelatedly...I'm 5'9" (only one inch taller than you). Your ultimate goal weight is 125 lbs ? Out of curiosity, have you ever weighed that number at your full height? I'm trying to picture myself at 125-130 and I can't even do it. I'm curious as to your answer because my "goal" is 165 and I guess everyone has a different body type, etc. 125 at 5'8" is hard for me to picture...

Thank you for the response yet i'm still kind of confused as to how is it that eating fat makes it faster to lose stored fat, i mean i'm just trying to understand the scientific approach on this. I know it controls cravings but if you somehow managed to control carb cravings and ate low fat wouldn't it be faster? Since your body will start burning off what you have stored instead of what you eat first?

Oh and yes i actually have weighed 125... not by a healthy way though but i'm sure that if i once did it i could do it again, i might never get there a healthy way though but it's certainly possible.

I hear ya. As long as it's realistic for you, then by all means go for it. I wanted to make sure it's something you've attained before (and not setting yourself up for failure). Sounds like you've got the right approach and spirit...

I'm not finding any good sites to send you to to explain the research, but what you suggest is opposite of how your body works. You've got to eat fat in order for the body to burn fat.

Erick, I noticed your goal weight also. It does seem very light for a male. I weighed 125 (occasionally up to 128-130) from my mid-teens until my 30s. I was thin but not a stick (34-24-35)...I can't imagine that weight on a man though. It just seem too thin.

                    Re: Low fat low carb?

I agree that you need to examine your overall goals including your goal weight. For your height, it may be unrealistic and it may be unhealthy. How long have you done Atkins Induction as defined in DANDR 2002?

Simply put and without the science that others may spend time providing to you, ketosis occurs when your metabolism switches from a carb burning "furnace" to a fat burning "furnace". Low fat isn't going to sustain ketosis for very long.

What you are hearing here is a lot of concern from posters about your health in questioning your weight goals.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

This post totally cleared up any doubt i had regarding this topic, as i've said it before all of you are super smart and helpful to me and i love to learn new things specially food wise.
I will try to re-evaluate my long term goals and maybe i'll stop at not such a low weight, but first things first i need to start induction once again and stick to it.

All of you offer great support and i'm really thankful.

                        Re: Low fat low carb?

Erick 125 pounds at 5'8 may be low however I didn't look up the healthy range for your height. I'm 5'10 and my realistic goal is around 170 (as I've been able to maintain that for long periods in the past). I've been at 148 and held that weight in the past- thin but it felt right for my body.

Right now my "long term" goal is 150 but once I'm at 170 I'm in what for me is my "healthy" range. It's not scientific, just practical.

Sounds like you're doing great and you've added a lot to this board so I appreciate that.

                          Re: Low fat low carb?

I think that one thing that is very common for people with weight issues is that their body image gets broken in all kinds of ways. They think they look worse than they do, they think they weight less than they do, they can't look at someone at a healthy weight and guess what that person weighs, etc.

Just so you know, 125 would be slender for a 5'4" woman. Various weight charts peg ideal male weight for your height at 150, 160 and 170. You might consider not having an end goal yet and simply focus on your 1st goal: 165. Then you can evaluate where you want to go from there.

I would guess that dropping another 45 pounds to get to 125 would seem like overkill unless you are aiming more for a specific lifestyle look (goth, twink, etc.) than a healthy set weight. And absolutely it is your body and you should work it how you like, I just wanted to make sure you were aware that it's very possible your perception of or idea of particular weights may be broken like it is for a lot of people.
