  • Your BMR

Has anyone else here calculate there BMR and if so do you go by that. I did mine and man my BMR was around 2220 calories a day, that seems to be a bit much. I know I used the BMR in the past but don't remember the rule of thumb, do you eat that many to lose or to maintain or 200 less or more, im so confused. If anyone has some insight that would be awesome.

    Welcome back, Lisa!

BMR is the amount of calories your body needs just to live. In other words, if you were in a coma or you are asleep, the BMR is the number of calories your body needs to sustain your heart beat, breathing rate, and all the other activities your body does while you are at rest.

So I should eat less than my BMR to lose then, and not go over correct. I just remembered there was something at one point that I was using, its been so long so I don't remember but it was you either needed to eat at least your bmr plus or minus 200 calories to lose weight.

FItDay has a nice feature that calculates how many fewer calories you need to ingest in a day to reach a goal weight (you plug in the goal weight).

I know Atkins does not focus on calories, but I like to keep an eye on that number as well as my daily net carbs.

No, you never want to eat under your BMR because that's the lowest amount of calories your body needs to function.

Also on Atkins, there is the metabolic advantage which allows you to eat a few hundred extra calories.
