  • Trying not to panic

I had a really good week--my menus looked great on fitday (protein/fat/carb ratios etc), I've been drinking 100 oz of water each day this month and I even added an extra exercise session nearly every day. But, today was my weigh-in and I'm up 2 pounds. I have NEVER not lost since I started on May 25th. I average 3 pounds a week. I know that I'm supposed to hit plateaus, but I still have TONS to lose. I thought that plateaus would come later. Help! I can't afford to stay at this weight, I need to keep losing in order to stay motivated. My first thought this morning while staring at the scale through tears was "what difference would a muffin make today?"

Yikes! I know that I didn't really gain 2 pounds--at least not two pounds of fat, but it feels awful. What should I do? Should I drop back down to induction to jump start myself? I know this happens to others but because I'm not metabolically resistant, I can't help thinking that I must be doing something wrong! I'm really regretting enjoying my chicken and zucchini dinner last night ;(

step away from the muffin!! Don't panic, there are many things that could contribute. My weight fluctuates all the time, and as you say, you 'average' 3 lbs per week. Treat today like any other and see what tomorrow brings. Stay strong.

This is the first time this happened to you? That is amazing
Weight fluctuate up and down quite a bit. Usually it is water retention. Maybe you ate more salt that usual yesterday. With me it is usually hormones. Certain dips in estrogen or something and I bloat like crazy. It can be as much as 5 lbs some times.
So don't worry. Absolutely no reason to worry.
Just arm yourself with knowledge about your wild and wonderful body and don't let that tricky sugar monster get to you. He takes advantage of things like this and try to put bad ideas in our brains Do not listen. You know this is normal

I'm betting its ALL water! Give it a couple of days and see.

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

        1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
        2nd mini goal: 140!
        3rd mini goal:135!
        4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

The extra exercise session might have caused some stubborn water retention.

What about your soluble fiber? Did you increase or change your dietary supplement? Or maybe started using more flax or something? That could also cause some water retention.

I wouldn't panic. It sometimes happens that weight doesn't go down... but I'd say it's normal.

            Re: Trying not to panic

My weight loss really teeters...I lose a pound, gain two, lose two, gain one, lose two...quite frequently. I try not to panic when the scale goes back up...weigh yourself over the next couple of days and you will probably see the scale dip back down.

That being said...my weight loss slowed majorly when I added an 35 minutes of cardio...I think it was because the fat was being replaced by muscle and your muscles hold water to heal after exercise. It is so hard when the scale doesn't budge and you feel like you are working your butt off.

Stick with it and good luck!

Have you added any new OWL foods this week?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                  Re: Trying not to panic

Thank you for the replies and support! I'm up another pound today and decided to use my Ketostix. Guess what? I'm not in ketosis anymore! I know people are going to tell me that I can't trust them, but they always turn for me when I am in ketosis. I don't have any other signs so I have to rely on them. And when I'm in ketosis, I lose weight! Since I have not eaten off plan for so long, I haven't been using them--but today I did and now everything is making sense to me! When I first started induction I would fall out of ketosis every time I added my "other" veggies so I had to stick to lettuce, cucumber, etc. salad veggies. Well now in owl I have added more "other" veggies, and my body just can't handle it. I wonder if I'm never going to be able to add other rungs to my WOE?

Anyway, I'm back to induction to get back into ketosis and then I'll be watching with the sticks daily to make sure I stay there and get back to losing instead of gaining. Thanks for holding my hand through this. I really can't afford to quit!

                    Re: Trying not to panic

How is your exercise schedule? Many times if you are exercising, or if you increase your exercise, your CCLL increases. Maybe it is also specific other foods that are the culprit. I find that is my problem, I have to be very careful and try each food one at a time and see what is the problem.

Also as others have said, maybe it is close to TOM (water retention), maybe more salt intake (water retention), and so on...keep on-plan and the scale will eventually submit to your will and start going down.

                    Good luck!

How many carbs do you consume during induction? How many did you go up when you added more veggies?

                        Re: Trying not to panic

While doing induction I'm on the low side (12 carbs average) since starting OWL I've been averaging 22. Maybe that's the answer? I've been using a lot of recipes instead of plain meat with veggies as I do in induction. My family will eat most of the recipes that I have tried so I like to use them, but not if it makes me gain weight. I also don't keep as close a watch on total carbs as much as the percentages in fitday but maybe I should keep my total carbs closer to 17 when I go back to OWL? By the way, it's not my TOM and honestly I can't wait until it comes next week because that is always a big weight loss week for me when it leaves.

                          Re: Trying not to panic

I stayed on induction forever. I ended up cheating with something about once a week at first. Two years later I find the stuff that stalled me so baddly before doesn't anymore. But it still slows it down. I got sick and really didn't feel like eating. I made myself eat the meat but decided to starve the bug by not giving it any carbs. Boy did the scales move! Tomarrow is grocery day and I'll have stuff in the house to eat and I'm all better. I know its weird, but virus and bugs don't seem to last as long with me when I take away the carbs.

I'm back in ketosis and the 3 pounds I gained last week have disappeared along with two others! Thanks so much for your support. I just really need to watch for signs that I'm not in ketosis anymore and then figure out which food choice did me in! Whew, made it through without a cheat or giving up. Thanks!
