  • Claim jumper OMG

So tonight is night 13 of the 14 day induction, and I stopped for a steak at Claim jumper. Ordered their top sirloin with roasted veggies.

So I'm halfway through the steak and browsing through the saloon drink guide just to look at the pictures ( I was bored) and discovered the nutritional information at the very back.

CJ TOP SIRLOIN HAS 34 GRAMS OF CARBS WTF?

I asked the server if they injected their meat and she nor the manager knew, or if they did, they weren't 'fessing up.

I stopped immediately (more than half the steak left) and wrapped it up for hubby. I was so upset. It really taught me to do more research before eating out.

    DANG!!

Wow...that's scary. Was there a sauce on it? Otherwise it really makes you wonder what they do to it.

EEK! Why do restraunts have to screw with our food. There is nothing better than a fresh cut of beefm salted and peppered, then grilled to perfection! I have gotten to where I will only eat out if I can see the ingredients list at the restraunt for what I order. The manager of the local Chili's personally brings it out printed up for me to take home. At least you had the will power to stop right in your tracks. Good luck and get back on track right away.

or was there a side dish that they were including (potato or french fries) but that you didn't order?

That's the thing...there was NOTHING on it! Grilled veggies on the side with two onion rings and a muffin (bread and side of our choice) but I took both those home to family.

I didn't lose overnight, but at least I didn't gain! Whew!

          Still, it IS scary.

well, couldn't it be the onion rings and the muffin that are to blame & not the meat?

(are you talking about fried onion rings? with batter?)

I wondered about that too, but they give you a choice of sides and a choice of bread, which makes me think the meat is injected with something. Otherwise they'd have to give a greater detailed breakdown of the veggie/potato side choices and the bread choices.

              Oh well. Interesting, nonetheless.

In the nutritional information area, they have this at the bottom of the page: "If there are any questions that we may help you with, please contact us at (800)949-4538." I would call that number and ask them... If they actually are doing a thorough sugar rub or, ugh, injection, that's just terrible.

many of the restaurants inject "flavorings" into their meat -- this is probably what happened. They also put extra salt and other seasonings to make the meat taste better....

                    Re: Claim jumper OMG

I looked at their online info and all their steaks have tons of carbs.
I also wonder if that carb count include the side dish served with the steak. Because the nutrition listed 34 carbs and 5 fibre and I think that they must have served with a veggie that had fiber in it. So they are counting the steak meal and not just the meat part.

Check out the sodium! They probably did inject it with something.

                        Re: Claim jumper OMG

I worked in restaurants for years through high school and college. It's a well-known trick in the grilling trade to sprinkle meat with sugar to accentuate the browning/searing of the meat. It reduces browning time, and highlights the coveted "diamond" sear marks. Sad but true. This would explain the high carb count if this is what they did.

                          Re: Claim jumper OMG

I just bought some innocent pork chops at Walmart. When I turned the package over to open them last night there was a sticker on them that said..."Tenderness & juciness enhanced with a deep basted solution of water, potassium lactate, dextrose, sodium phosphate & salt." It still said "0" carbs per serving, but who knew they were injecting all that crap into a simple pork chop...I was annoyed.
