  • Red Vs. White Wine

I am wondering if it's better to drink red rather than white wine. The carb count is lower for white, yet it seems as though the advice is to drink red...any thoughts? (I'm not there yet...planning ahead...wine taster by trade ).

Go to the USDA Nutrient Database. Enter "wine" in the food query box. It will bring up a listing of reds and whites. If you click on the average red table wine and average white table wine for 5 fluid ounces (the standard serving size), both have 3.8 total carbs, 0 fiber grams.

Also the jury is out on whether red has more health benefits than white: some studies say reds are more beneficial, some studies say there is no difference. But all studies indicate that if you exceed the 1-2 servings daily, your risk for cardiovascular disease increases.

I do understand the health benefits of red over white...I got the carb count from the Atkins book, it says that 4oz. of red has 2.0 carbs and white has 0.9 carbs, so I was just wondering if they are metabolized differently or something.

Unless you are on Rung 5 it really doesn't matter....wine isn't allowed until then. When you make it to that rung drink what you prefer or whatever goes best with whatever you are eating.

It's really a matter of interest...curiosity as it were. Being very interested in wine from many standpoints, I thought it was an interesting question. I am asked many questions about Atkins and wine from my friends & colleagues and I like to be able to discuss Atkins with some amount of knowledge...so it does matter to me. I'll just let it go however...perhaps I misunderstood that one was supposed to drink red over white...my bad.

I think healthwise you might want to choose red, but if you are a great "appreciator" of wine and you are out to dinner with the intent of enjoying yourself. Choose the glass that would most compliment your meal. And enjoy it! LOL Just remember to not over do it. That's what got us all into trouble to begin with, right? ;o)

On rung 5, there's no one that's "better" over the other from what I've been able to tell. In my analysis of the carb counts, reds and whites are generally similar, with Rieslings/sweet/dessert wines being higher in carbs, relatively.

I guess the Atkins book just misprinted the carb counts or something...and I think I misread advice that we should be drinking red over white on Atkins...
