  • Away for the weekend ~ what am I going to eat?

I'm on a very high fat version of induction (almost the fat fast) because I am extremely metabolically resistant to losing weight. I have lately come to suspect a pork allergy so have given up eating pork to see if that is what is stalling me (I've never lost so much as a pound).

I have just realised that all the meat that I usually take with me when going away, that is, the dry sausage that does not need to be refridgerated, is PORK! The shop I bought it does not have anything other than pork-based meat that can be kept out of the fridge for long periods.

I'm travelling by train not car and cannot take any kind of refridgeration unit.

I thought of tinned tuna but I am on 80% fat not high protein so that is no good as there is not enough fat. Something like boiled eggs won't keep very long. Cheese is something I find I can only eat very small quantities of (it seems very dry to me) and also it is too carby.

    I am in the UK.

Won't you be able to take a soft sided cooler (lunch bag with you) and stock it with as much perishable food as you can?

      Hi Lastchance,
Are you worried about the whole weekend? Or just the train trip? You didn't make it too clear how long of a trip or what period of time you are worried about.

I am worried about the same type of thing, soon I will be taking a 4 hour airflight. From the time I will have to leave the house, get to the airport, check in, fly, land, get luggage, etc...It would be close to 9 hours! I will be quite limited. But I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

But let me tell you this...a few months ago I had to attend a family gathering. I had to drive 1 hour to pick up my Mom and sister, and then drive another 45 minutes to the event. I had no idea what type of food they would have, so I stocked up a cooler in car. AS it turned out, all the event had that I could eat was celery! So I kept going out to the car every so often and had some of my own food. This is what I took with me, and maybe if you just need food for the train ride, you can get a soft cooler and there are various types of ice pcaks to put inside) as Chauber suggested and pack some turkey, or no carb turkey lunchmeat, eggs, or deviled eggs, (not so dry), maybe some clouds (a dessert can be made in bite size pieces, celery, red pepper strips and dip made with mayo and sour cream.

Maybe for the trip you will have to eat a little more protein temporarily, and have some of that tuna. Sometimes you may have to modify things a bit, while still being within the diet.
Let us know how the trip was.
      Good Luck, ~Mary

          Thanks for replies.

          Ok I have an idea.

What if I cook some steaks and cut them into pieces, wrap individually and put into my plastic coolbox, then freeze them. This box has a sort of bag thing filled with some chemical and you freeze it and attach it to the box. It's a small Tupperware type box.

How long would this meat keep once defrosted and not refridgerated?

Not long. I wouldn't mess with unrefrigerated meat, whether cooked or not. Sorry I can't be much of a help other than to echo what others have said above. My only other thought would be some kind of jerky, but that's way too low in fat and high in protein for the ratios you're looking for.

If you freeze meat and then put it in a cooler that has extra coolant...it should be fine for most of the day at least. If the meat is still cold to the touch it should be safe to eat. This is not a bad idea if the train ride is going to last about a day.

Re: Away for the weekend ~ what am I going to eat?

Last June (maybe July) I went to Austria by bus (24 freaking hours!) and I took a cooler bag (about the size of a large purse). In it I carried different types of cheeses (Gouda and Cumin) I also made salad raps (they didn't last to long...got smushed) I also grabbed some beef jerky and other dried meats and put them in there. I also managed to put 2 1,5 liter water bottles in there. The bag was small enough to fit under the chair and all I had to do was get what I wanted at that time. Everything stayed pretty cold for most of the trip there. I was cheesed out but it worked.

                  I hope that helps.

Re: Away for the weekend ~ what am I going to eat?

I cooked three sirloin steaks, cut them into 2oz pieces, froze them in bags of two, put the lot into a small coolbox about 6 inches by 4 and about 2 inches high, attached to that box is a blue bag of chemical that you freeze and it attaches to that box inside another box. This was removed from the freezer at 1130am Saturday and the blue bag was still frozen on the Sunday night and still extremely cold but mushy on the Monday morning.

Thanks to having that box of steak I was able to buy just a side salad to eat when I sat down to firstly a banquet dinner that was being bought for me on the Saturday (my friend was guest of honour and I was her companion) and the subsequent night, then ate the steak in my room afterwards.

By Monday there was no steak left. Breakfast had been paid for so I took my coolbox with me and after being obliged to eat a plate of bacon and eggs as bacon was the only meat available (I am not eating pork as it suspect it stalls me) I went to the cold buffet and filled the box with slices of ham, ham-based sausage, pork sausages and cheeses to eat on the journey. Again there was no meat on offer except pork. (Don't these hotels realise how many Jews there are in the world? How are they being catered for?)

So on the long journey home I ate those cold things but there were nowhere near fatty enough to quell my hunger.

I did extremely well at the hotel in the face of a million temptations, from fruit to bread to potatoes (my faves). However, back in my home town my American companion dearly wanted to taste the local, fried "fish and chips" so I duly obliged, buying just the fish for myself. When I started to eat it though it was so hard to separate the batter from the fish, PLUS I was ravenously hungry, PLUS the crispy, brown batter looked absolutely mouthwatering, PLUS the batter had all the salt and vinegar on it, and all the flavour and the fat, that I could take no more of the temptation, this was beyond my endurance, and I ate it!

I have no idea how many carbs are in the fried batter, which is made of WHITE FLOUR of course, double enemy.

Re: Away for the weekend ~ what am I going to eat?

Oooh, Helena, well done on coping with sticking to plan while you were away
One way I add fat to lean meats on the go is to pinch those little tubs of Hellman's mayonnaise if I eat out - they usually bring more to the table than I want to eat with that meal. Or I ask for an extra pot if they are a bit stingy with them
These keep well unrefridgerated for a couple of days, so if I manage to get them home the same day I can store them in my fridge to add to me emergency stash to take with me another trip.

So if out and about I can buy some lean meats if that is all available and add mayo to it.

What a pity your friend put 'temptation' in your way after such a good trip

I am lucky in that I never liked batter on fish and so I always order chicken breast if Sam fancies fish'n'chips and eat it with a couple of gherkins for 'salad veg'.

Maybe if that situation happens again you could order yourself the same and eat that while others are indulging in battered fish. I love the way our local chippie does the chicken breast, all golden with a crispy delicious skin!!

Anyway, I hope you got straight back onplan after that meal?!?!? If so you should not suffer too much except maybe from extra cravings for a few days.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                        Hi Eliz

There was no mayo to be had at all at the Hilton. I have a giant jar in the fridge but could not have carried it about with me. I'm also aware that they all contain sugar - horror!

                        Love

                          Shame on them!!

It reminds me of the time we went to a 'Toby Carvery' when after asking for some butter to put on my veggies the watress told me they didn't have any!! After speaking to their chef she offered to pop over the road to their Tesco Express and buy some to be able to supply me. Though I did have to wait 5 minutes or so which let the veg go cold and had to ditch my veggies and get fresh ones when the butter arrived.

She was amazed when I refused those little packets of what I always refer to as 'axle grease'
But I was amazed that obviously no-one else had asked for butter in the past. Surely I can't be the only Atkineer in our area!!
