  • Suggestions Needed

New to Atkins and yes I posted an introduction! Istarted Induction on Weds and came across this website and I am thrilled to find you. I have some unique challenges because of my job. I travel to several cities a week (on and off airplanes) and anticipate will have challenges finding food on the run and eating lunch with clients. Since I am home this week and next (but go to several different meetings a day) I thought this would be the best time to start the induction program. Being home for a week is an extreme rarity AND wonderful.

Today, I ran out of the house late and didn’t plan accordingly (and this is just day 2!) However, I found a kebab place and ate two kebabs (chicken and lamb--no rice or nan) and a little of the salad—no sauces, etc. While I assume this is not optimal, I wonder if anyone would have some suggestions for induction and beyond.

Thanks in advance for all your help, suggestions and support

    Re: Suggestions Needed

Hi there and welcome to the ADBB!
Planning ahead is the key. I know it can be a bit of a bore for someone with your lifestyle, but you'll soon get into the habit of it and it'll become second nature.

Keep a small cooler bag with a few high fat snacks for those times when cravings hit or for when you have difficulty finding the right kinds of foods. Olives, cheese, hard boiled eggs, some avocado, leftover cuts of meat... all good choices (in the correct quantities for the programme).

As for eating out with clients... where I am, in most restaurants this would not be a problem. There are always plenty of low carb choices. I'm sure someone will chime in with good tips for the States, and I'm sure there are many places where they'll cater to your requests. Don't be afraid to ask.

Remember to exercise and to drink plenty of water. Both very important for weight loss and an important part of the plan.

    Happy losing!

      Re: Suggestions Needed

I definitely agree with taking a smaller cooler with you (something you can stick in your carryon with an ice bag perhaps. While you won't be able to take water "with" you I'm sure you can find bottled water at every airport once through security.

As for dining out..we have been doing it A LOT lately and most places will have salads that will work (a nice cobb with blue cheese for example) and if you worry about dressings you can just ask for oil and vinegar. Also, there are always steaks (but be careful if they put sugar on them, many non-steakhouse places do). A baked fish with vegetables are fine. If you HAVE to do Chinese I discovered (depending on the place and you would have to take the chance) that Mu Shu isn't that bad if you don't put the sauce on or use the pancakes. Also, the Egg Foo Yung could be edible if you don't eat the gravy. I generally try to steer clear of Mexican food as there are rarely options we can eat on Induction unless you do a fajita without the wrap...but even that they tend to marinate in sweet sauces.

      Hope this helps a little.

Whichever restraunt you choose to go to ask the server for a suggestion (they may know what you would need on a low-carb plan). When in doubt ask for a list of the ingredients (which they should do because many people have allergies to foods). If the server or manager helps you out..remember that when you leave a tip.

        Good luck!

          Re: Suggestions Needed

These are all great suggestions and tips. Thank you!! I love the cooler idea however since I don't check bags (if they got lost they would have a tough time catching up with me) I think perhaps tweaking that idea would help since I am only allowed my suitcase and briefcase (2 items) and an icepack or gelpack is not allowed (I tried it before)--maybe a large ziplock baggy with the items you mentioned that I can keep in my briefcase but can you think of another method that would keep things cool? Remember that I am in hotels every night and through airports most days.
