i don't know why, but i am extremely discouraged after the ten pound jump on the scale, i have no idea what it could be, and its not going back down, i feel like everything i just worked for has gone down the drain for some reason, i really didn't think it was possible to gain 10 pounds in a week!!! if anybody has any advice or encouragment i would be so glad to hear it at this point in my life!!!!!

Talk to us. What's going on? What have you done in the last week that's different? What are you eating? What exercise are you doing? What supplements are you taking? How much water are you drinking? Are you having any health issues? Is your TOM sneaking up soon? Retaining water?

Something is going on. You just have to be brutally honest about what you've done differently and what's going on. So?

Why don't you post your menu's so the other more experienced members can have a look at it? Maybe it's almost TOM?

Re: close to calling it quits...

IF you're all about reaching your goal, then quitting really isn't an option, is it? You didn't gain 10 pounds of fat within a week. Unless....there was some binge fest that went on that we don't know about!

Quitting will reintroduce more pounds. Quitting won't get you any closer to goal. Quitting will make you feel worse than you already do.

Have you posted your menu?? That's the first question most experienced Atkineers would ask you. You need to post your menu for tips and hints at what could be going on. I've been known to gain 5 pounds when TOM comes around. At Easter, I cheated for one huge carby meal. Wound up gaining 9 pounds and the scale wouldn't budge. It took me 3 weeks just to get back where I was. Are you exercising? Are you losing inches? Have you measured yourself with a tape measure?

I now weigh what I did at the beginning of July. Guess what? I'm smaller than I was then. I'm wearing size 8 jeans and I'm almost ready for a size 6. I was wearing size 10 jeans in July. You have to stick with it. You have to pay the price and stay on plan for it to pay you back. Maybe you just need to switch up on some different foods. Some bodies don't like the same old foods every day. Others, lose better with the same old foods. A HUGE part of the journey is learning some valuable lessons about your own body. You only learn those lessons though, if you're on the journey.

Post your start date...start weight...current weight...goal and all of your exercise and food and water intake. It all works together. You tell us what the ingredients are, we'll analyze and see if we can get your recipe to come out like you want it to. Hang in there. Most of us have been there. It all comes down to how bad you want it.

You're receiving such excellent advice, hope you will follow it.

Just another thought here, which certainly does not negate following the advice you are receiving ... I am wondering ... have you had your thyroid checked recently? If not, an unexplained weight gain can indicate an underfunctioning thyroid. If you truly cannot find an explanation, consider scheduling an appointment with your doctor. Describe the weight loss and why you believe it should not have happened. Ask for a blood test to check the thyroid and anything else he might want to consider.

Edit: Never mind. I see you found the culprit, glad to hear it.

            Here's the answer

People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

"Some men give up their designs when they have almost reached the goal; While others, on the contrary, obtain a victory by exerting, at the last moment, more vigorous efforts than ever before."

Rayley my girl, giving up is NOT an option! Sorry, not gonna let you go there....that's the easy way out and you deserve better than that.

Now, having said this.....I just finished reading your post letting us all know that you've been reading your scales incorrectly which is good news and I'm so glad you've updated us....my concern is this....what if you weren't reding your scales incorrectly and you actually had gained 10 lbs????? I'm going to tell you something I really want you to realize....giving up would make you feel a million times worse then a 10 lb gain....trust me on this ok....been there done that...except for this time and believe me...there have been days where I wasn't reading my scales incorrectly and did experience anywhere from a 3 lb to a 10 lb gain.

The key was, not giving up.....it's that simple. Giving up is the EASY and yet VERY painful way out. Problem solving the situation, re-working one's game plan and continuing on is the key to success.

Thankfully in your case this time....it was an error in reading the scales....that's terrific news. I just want you to re-think your thoughts about giving up if it wasn't a scale error.

I'm right here behind you and care what happens.

                Keep up the good fight!

                Hugs,
                Sarina

Re: close to calling it quits...

I was addicted to weighing myself 2-3 times a day and it had gotten to the point where the type of day I was having DEPENDED on the number on the scale! It was nerve racking and it caused me to cheat as it gave me that "might as well eat this rice since I've gained weight anyways" attitude. The best thing I did was give BOTH my scales to my best friend and she took them to her house and hid them from me just in case I was tempted to take them back when I visited. I had not weighed myself in about 2 months and I felt GREAT!
