  • leg cramps are back

hi i had leg cramps week 1 of induction so i started taking potasium ,magnesium and calcium and they seemed to go now im week 4 and they are back and really painfull in my thighs and calfs ,it started saturday at the end of my 50 mile ride and i just put it down to perhaps loss of electrolytes through so much sweating but that was 2 days ago and im still getting them, the chemist said to leave the supplements out for a couple of days and ive also brought some crampex tablets but they just say for night time cramps but im getting these in the day real bad too, and i did go to gym this morning so perhaps it was because i could have done with another day to recover im not sure im open to any help anyone can give i dont want to give up now as im doing so well
    thanks

Personally, I would not take such a supplement unless recommended to do so by a doctor. You get more potassium from foods than from OTC potassium supplements; if you need more, you need a prescription. You should get enough calcium from your diet if you choose foods carefully.

My advice would be to see your doctor. Also enter your foods in FitDay and check where you are at with your vitamins and minerals.

      Dehydration is usual culprit.

U probably need alot more water esp since u are exercising so much. I, too, suffer from leg cramps sually when i'm dehydrated, but sometimes i can corelate it to certain foods - the best thing for me is Tonic water (sugar free of course). The Quinine in the tonic water addresses the cramp and it's usuallly gone after 2-3 sips. this is a fairly common remedy, several doctors on diferent continents have recommended this to me over the years.

Dehydration and inadequate stretching are the causes of 99% of my leg pains.

Jake, take a look at this thread, the lite salt seemed to work for me http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...eg-cramps.html

Started this diet on Sun 4/26/09

50 lbs gone on Sun 9/27/09

Well its been over a year now and I am currently on maintenance and still trying to adjust to the "new" ME. No major struggles to report, just livin' day to day.

Don't know if Morton Lite Salt (potassium chloride/iodide) is available in the UK. Potassium rich produce such as avocado work well and in a pinch, diet tonic water.

jake it takes awhile for your muscles insulin receptors to adapt and become insulin senseitive

when you ate high carbs in the past your muscles insulin receptors became resistant and or also alot of them were removed makeing your muscles even more insulin resistant. but now that your eating low carb atkins your body will start produceing more insulin receptors for your muscles and eventually you will have normal muscles again which are insulin senseitive

it wont happen over night i think it takes a good 5 weeks to really notice a differnce and i think it would be geting close too 100% senseitive 2 months down the road

I think you should see your physician. Leg cramps/pains have various causes with mineral deficiencies only being one of them. Other things like blood clots can cause leg pains. So go to your physician.
