  • Why do we want it NOW?

I found myself today wishing I would just magically drop the weight and have read several post today on folks just wanting to give up after such a short period of time.

Why do we have this menatlity that we need to get the weight off immediately?? We did not get this way overnight so why do we think it will happen overnight?

As I said I had the thoughts this morning and yesterday as well. I wasnt about to give up but just wishing the loss would come faster. So I am in the same boat wtih those questions I just asked.

I had to remind myself of a few things:

    - It is MUCH harder to lose the weight than it is to put it on.

    - Sometimes life does get in the way and throws you a curveball. That does not mean your a failure or that you should quit. That means you keep going right where you left off. A good example for me is when I had surgery almost 2 weeks ago. I didnt let it get me down and I ate atkins friendly with one exception of chili my poor hubby fixed me and the pudding they fed me in the post op room while I was so out of it. But I didnt use it as an excuse for a free for all either.

-In the walk of life, pay attention to your steps. It is fine to trip and fall. Pick yourself up and start walking again. If you fall and stay down, life keeps on moving. It doesn’t stop and wait for you to ready yourself. I believe a large majority in our society is in the “down” position. There are not enough people walking.

-Don't get caught up in the way of thinking where you actually start to believe that what you are doing is futile. As long as you are doing SOMETHING, you are on the right track. It's those who give up who are heading in the wrong direction.

My point to this post is that by exercising, eating healthier, and sticking with it WILL BRING CHANGE!!! It just takes time and we just need to remember that.

So true. We live in an instant society. It has reduced our abilities to be patient and work for change.

Great post. Everyone wants a quick fix but that is not how it works. Why do you think we are the fatest country? Because everyone wants a quick fix to lose weight and then gives up and gains even more weight. We want instant gratification but dont make the effort.

Re: Why do we want it NOW?

I watch these weight loss shows on TV. Biggest Loser, Big Medicine, I Lost It!, XWeighted etc... they are very motivational... BUT what drives me nuts is listening to their personal stories and hearing over and over, "I tried such and such diets and they didn't work"... and I KNOW that they work, it's just that people give up so easily that they assume the diet doesn't work, when all along it is THEM that isn't working...

Diets are HARD. They take a 100% commitment. They take TIME. I just wish more people would realize this and not give up at the first evidence of a flat lined scale...

So true! Everyone wants a quick fix. When I see a post asking if they can lose 75 pounds by Christmas, I hesitate to even answer because people get annoyed and don't look at the response as positive, but it is always honest. I don't think we have to be mean in responses, just honest based on our own experiences. I struggled with weight for many, many years. My weight gain continued to be overwhelming for me with each weight loss program. I didn't have support around me except for my "love is blind husband!". But you learn eventually that it is a day at a time, a meal at a time. And like we learn how to walk, we put on meal on the table after another meal, drink our water, take our supplements, do our exercise.

My theory is that I was finally ready. I knew it might take four or five years. I needed to be patient, vigalent, educated about Atkins, involved on this board, accountable, goal oriented, realistic. Yes I could picture myself at a lower weigh, but I needed to be real about it.

For me, Atkins has been the answer in so many ways. I'm healthier and more fit than I have been since I played kickball in my neighborhood when I was 10.

Truth is, quick fix doesn't work. And the more we sought a quick fix, the more we put on weight. I'm glad I took the cookie dough out of my ears and found this plan.

So when people as whether they can lose "x" amount of weight by their class reunion, I want them to ask themselves, what will happen if they don't committ to it ... I will always advice people to educate themselves, stick to it, no excuses for cheating, follow it exactly and it will work.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.
