  • Step Away from the Bagels!

We often have treats at work...birthdays, holidays, 'just cuz' days...and I can ignore them. I try not to pass the table, or I just grab a piece of cheese. But, for the most part, I can pass by.

Today, we have fresh bagels. They are only a couple of desks away and I can smell them. This is going to be a tough day!

    You can do it!

I work in a doctor's office. Every so often, we have people from radiology centers, physical therapy centers, weight loss centers, etc. dropping off food. A couple of weeks ago, the physical therapists dropped off a giant cookie (picture a medium pizza, but make it a cookie, rather than a pizza), last month the weight loss people brought a basket of candy (yes, weight loss people brought candy!)

I visual those foods as fat on my body. So they are easy for me to avoid. But when they bring food that I can have on my Atkins like nuts and fruits, I have to really, really, really practice portion control. If it's nuts, I put a portion in a cup and don't go back for refills. If it's fruit like an apple or pear, I split it with a co-worker.

On the rare occasion we get sandwiches, I eat the innards.

Today was 'step away from the Chinese food' day for me! One of the departments had a lunch meeting, and the department head popped her head into my office and offered me some. I was afraid to even approach that heavenly smell (that permeated the *entire* western wing of our building) for fear of snarfing the entire table. May the Gods of Self-Restraint smile down upon us today!

Re: Step Away from the Bagels!

I was at a seminar this morning that had some bagels and such out. But because I had ate a good full breakfast - five pieces of bacon, scrambled eggs with butter sautéed mushrooms and 20 oz of water and a large cup of 1/2 decaf coffee, I had no urges to grab anything. I was grateful they had coffee and then during the break I grabbed one of the water bottles. Even grabbed an extra for the ride back to work.

If I walk by something that is carb-heavy that smells good, I think of reasons why obesity is bad for my health and go find some water.

I think one of the worst [best] smells is fresh popcorn. We have microwaves not far from where I sit, and when someone makes popcorn - it's just a killer!

Anyway - I won. Didn't even want the bagel. I had brought plenty of good food with me to work, so wasn't a problem!

Thanks for posting - you all helped me get thru the day!

Re: Step Away from the Bagels!

Today at my work it's Potluck Thanksgiving (Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend). I brought no potluck, but will be around it during lunch time because the higher ups thought it would be a great idea to do it near our cubicles instead of in the huge lunch room like we normally do.

I ate my breakfast already, and DEFINITELY brought my own lunch. I didn't participate in the potluck, but I might indulge in a piece of chicken (plain - purchased by the actual social committee - so I don't have to feel badly about not bringing anything in). I didn't bring anything because I didn't want to be tempted in eating it last night while it stayed at my home. I'm really trying to keep all bad foods out of my home. Sometimes things sneak in - like tonight I'm making pumpkin pies for the weekend. I just try not to have that stuff in my home as much as possible so that I don't even have to worry about temptation.

I do have to say though - I feel like I'm really exercising that willpower thingy. I've done SOOOOO well.

I'm glad you were able to keep away from the bagels!! That's very strong of you. You must be exercising that willpower as well.

I keep reading that the more you exercise your willpower, the easier it gets. I think that's true.

            Goal 3 - 50 lbs down (December 1st, 2009)
            Goal 4 - Highest Pregnancy Weight with 1st right before c-section (February 20, 2010)
Goal 5 - Lowest weight reached on WW after having 1st child
            Goal 6 - 100 lbs down
            Goal 7 - Pre-pregnancy weight with 1st
Goal 8 - Weight I met my husband
            Goal 9 - 150 lbs down
            Goal 10 - Weight in Grade 8
            Goal 11 - Weight in Grade 6

Re: Step Away from the Bagels!

congrats WB I agree completely - my willpower is so much stronger these days! I now have a habit of saying 'NO' quite strongly to myself when I pass by 'treats'...and then I smile to myself realizing that I can do it - it's not so hard! It does get easier as time goes by. It also helps to have food options at my desk, so I bring plenty every day
