  • So it took 70lbs...

...people that don't know I'm dieting have finally started to notice/comment on my weight loss.

I was blown away when I saw some former co-workers for the first time in months, 50lbs less than the last time they had seen me, and no-one said anything. Same people, 6 weeks and 10 more lbs later...and still nothing!

Today, same people, another 10lbs (OK, 9, for a total of 69lbs). 2 people noticed the weight loss, and someone thought I had a new haircut (does that count as noticing??)

If you had told me 6 months ago that it would take 70lbs for people to notice, I would never have believed you! No matter what anyone says/doesn't say or thinks...I'm still going strong & looking forward to the next 70.

Wow 70 pounds - wonderful. Congratulations Julie.
I think it is hard for people to notice when they see you every day. Change is so gradual. And some don't know quite what to say. If you comment of someone looking good because they are losing weight they may think you thought they looked aweful before. The times I have made comments on people's weightloss I told them that they like their new look.

Congratulations, Julie! I know what you mean about people taking so long to notice and/or comment. (I'm still waiting for the people closest to me to say something. They know I've made changes, but still no comments about how I look?!) 70 pounds is such a huge accomplishment! Great Job sticking with it!!

Hey Julie, That is a great accomplishment! Congrats!

But let me say this so you won't feel badly about some not noticing...Two years ago I lost enough weight to really show, although not as much as you, probably 40#. And it really did show. Anyway, I hadn't seen my sister and brother in law since starting the weight loss, and when I saw them I thought they would be so surprised to see me and how thin I was!!!

They didn't say a word. I was so sad. As it turns out, after I spoke to my Mom about it, she talked to my sister and what happened was they DID notice the weight loss, but they didn't say anything so as to not hurt my feelings. They felt by praising my weight loss, they would be saying I was really fat before!!!

So they just didn't want to hurt my feelings! So possibly the same thing happened to you.

            Again! Great job!

That is awesome! And I agree, I think people DO notice, they just feel awkward sometimes about how to say "you look great!" without insinuating that you maybe didn't look quite as great before, LOL! Also I wonder sometimes if people who don't know you hardly at all may be hesitant to mention it in case you have been suffering some illness they might not be aware of, and therefore they don't want to bring it up just in case...

I would bet big money a lot more folks than 2 have noticed! Congrats!

                  70lbs! Congratulations!

I know how frustrating it can be when people are so blind. It took one of my best friends almost 50lbs (since Jan 0 to notice that 1/4 of me was gone. He is still a little shocked that he missed it. People are blind and some really don't want to see.

I found an old picture of my mother from like 2003 when she was at her heaviest and I was shocked. How could I have missed her losing well over 100lbs? Arrogant I guess. To caught up in my own life and body.

I am getting side tracked here :P. Way to go!

                    Grats on the 70lbs!

I agree that others probably notice but just don't say anything. I was in the store last week and the cashier (who I see probably weekly, week in and week out) suddenly said "You have slimmed down!". I told her how much I had lost and she was so nice and "oohhed and ahhhed" over me. I told her thank you for commenting because nobody else really does and she couldn't believe that. Another time when someone else commented, I also told them Thank you for noticing. Because I do appreciate those comments and I don't get them very often. Its odd because I am actually kind of shy and don't like to call attention to myself but with my weight loss, it is positive reinforcement and I like it.

Keep up the good work Julie!

                        Re: So it took 70lbs...

Congrats on the weightloss! Some people just take a while to notice, or if they do, are afraid to say something in case they are wrong or you take it the wrong way. I know a co-worker of mine that lost alot of weight and it took me a while to find the right way and opportunity to say something. In return, I always try and receive their comments with great pleasure and thankfulness.

One other thing I know about me is I tended to hide my weight alot under bulky oversize clothes so it's hard to tell how much weight I've lost unless you haven't seen me for a while or until I start wearing better fitting clothes.

Don't forget to take pictures along the way too for your own comparison and motivation!

OOOooooo Congratulations!! 70 lbs is fantastic!! You are great motivation for me to keep going - and for others too. Seeing you achieve your goals is inspirational!!

Keep up the fantastic work, and I look forward to seeing your side-by-sides.

As for the people who haven't mentioned your weight before now - it's such a touchy subject. When I was pregnant with my daughter, there was another woman at work who is Muslim, so her clothes were very loose fitting on her, but I could have sworn her belly started to look bigger and I thought she might be pregnant. I never said anything though for fear of being wrong. Turns out she was, lol - but I didn't find out until I started back to work again after my Mat leave was over. So something that people really want noticed doesn't always get said out loud - we all have this fear of saying the wrong thing, so we just keep our mouths shut until it's so entirely obvious that NOT saying anything would just be mean.

                            70 lbs!!! WTG!!!!

70 Lbs and 50% to goal is just AMAZING!!!!! It shows definate stamina and serious committment to the goals you've set!!!! HOW WONDERFUL!!!!

WHen i lost about 25 lbs a few years ago, someone said to me 'oh you look terrific' and i was so glad that she noticed and acknowledged my accomplishment. Then she said, ever so graciously, 'you know some people refrain from commenting on weight loss because it would imply that you were overweight previously and that would be insulting' . I told her that overweight people generally know that they are overweight so i don't read into that sort of implication. i think as w/ most struggles/achievements in life, efforts should be applauded and i really appreciate her comments as a compliment - not just about looking good, but for me i was feeling good that i was staying on track and motivated and the looks compliment helped strengthen my fortitude. (Hoping to get that fortitude back in a major way these days)

Congratulations Again! Keep it going strong!
