  • Eco-Atkins?

I've been a die hard Atkins follower for years, but read in a magazine the other day about a new diet called Eco-Atkins. Has anyone ever heard of it? Had success with it? I don't buy into the usual "fad diets", however the stuff I've read about it seems pretty interesting. I'd like to hear you guys' take on it.

    Re: Eco-Atkins?

When Eco-Atkins was in the news a while back, I was hoping for some more concrete studies and an outlined plan like regular Atkins. What I've found is bits of info stating that Eco-Atkins is a healthy alternative to the high protein, low carb Atkins diet. As soon as I hit that in the writeups, I'm immediately turned off and doubt the accuracy of the entire article. And yes, folks even WebMD calls Atkins high protein.

There doesn't seem to be a specific program outlined other than the daily carbs hover between 100g-150g/day as protein is mainly from soy and gluten (carby alternatives to animal proteins) as well as nuts along with the standard non-starchy veggies. Fats come from nuts, avocado and oils.

The high carbs in Eco-Atkins (as well as all the soy) made me pass this one by...quickly too.

Yea, I agree, the daily carb allowance floored me. If I ever decide to give it a try that carb count is going to have to go WAY down!

Oh, I just read about that last night! Someone gave the magazine and said they had come out with a new Atkins plan. I read 1 paragraph and knew it was a phony. I don't how they think they'll get away with calling it Atkins. I would imagine the corp would be suing right about now.

Besides, 130 grams of carbs a day???? Please! Its like they were trying to find vegetarian way of doing Atkins and there really isn't. No way that you could get into ketosis in that plan. A total waste of my reading time.

That is exactly what they're trying to find!

Remember, too, this is the same magazine that promoted Kimkins!

          Do make sure you read:

          The ?Eco-Atkins? Diet

It also seems to be "popular" at a site that sells the "products" (soy based) for "doing" Eco-Atkins.

Thanks for the details on this diet. It has nothing to do with eating real food looks like. And they should definitely be sued! If you don't want to do Atkins that's fine, do something else but don't call it Atkins! I've gotten touchy before when I did something off plan and people said, but its not "ATKINS!". I find even myself getting a little upset at Eco Atkins. I've always liked my meat and have zero tolerance for fake meat. I live in a rural area and luckily people don't get as into vegetarianism around here like they do in some places. But still it irks me that they would steal the name to wrap around this diet. Even the vegans are jealous cause Atkins has a reputation for WORKING!

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

            3rd mini goal:135!
            4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

Yea it was Women's world. My husband seems to think even if you don't eat REAL meat, some of the Boca stuff is pretty low carb. Like the ground beef and sausage. So even though the mag said 130 carbs a day, you can kinda do a low carb vegan version, you just have to pay attention to the nutrition facts. But yea, I totally agree, they shouldn't call it Atkins...cause it's totally not.

I agree there is a lot of room to individualize Atkins once you are out of induction. For some of us - like me - going totally vegan would be tough as my carb limit is so low and most of the meat alternatives (soy, beans, gluten) have quite a bit of carbs with the protein. I would have to compensate by not eating veggies which to me would be silly - but some people may be able to work it out.

Well, I suppose its more healthy than the way vegetarians have been eating and suppose that is good for them. But ECO ATKINS, PLEASE! lol. I won't actually loose sleep over it, but eyerolling over it did happen. I've just never been fond of vegetarians in general I suppose. I never bought that it was the healthy way to live to be a hundred. I buy used and refurbished where ever possible. I shop at thrift stores. But I draw the line at saving the planet by eating soy burgers! Its just me. After all the Atkins bashing they did, snagging the name seems a bit lame to me. I won't loose sleep over it. Its probably better for them than what they have been eating. I wouldn't wish bad health on anybody for any reason.

Processed soy products is "more healthy"?

Actually, when I was a vegetarian, I lost weight. Being a vegetarian takes work ... getting complete protein isn't always easy. I'm sure many people do "sloppy" vegetarian, just like people do "sloppy" low-fat, and even "sloppy" low carb!

The "study" wasn't really much of a study.

                          It's just "buzz", imho!

                            Re: Eco-Atkins?

Well, I think what Rita meant (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that many vegetarians eat enormous amounts of refined pastas, breads, etc, to get their calories. I have known MANY throughout my life and only one of them ate a good amount of veggies, beans, soy, etc. In fact, I went on a month-long cleanse once and had to cut out all meat products, dairy, gluten, etc and while at the end I felt great I was eating a lot of frankenfoods with my fruits and veggies. Tons of ingredients I could never spell without a chemists degree.

I suppose, in a way, their plan would be healthier than shoving bagel after bagel down your throat, or eating pounds of pasta a day. But still, not a huge fan of having tons of soy in my diet or processed low-carb foods like the Atkins breads, shakes, etc.

But you guys are absolutely right, this did come to us from the same rag that extolled the virtues of Kimkins.

Also, according to the Atkins website they endorse this new plan. Oh, if only Dr. Atkins were still alive. They'll just slap "atkins" on anything these days for a buck.

There will always be organizations that try to make money off from people who want to lose weight by flashing new programs before our eyes. Atkins Nutrional keeps reinventing themselves to dazzle people who are desperate to lose weight. The solution is really sooooo simple. Dr. Atkins penned it in DANDR 2002. I'm happy with that, thank you. Keep your Eco-Atkins or Turbo Atkins, but confusing people about it all and over-complicating it isn't helping anyone.
