I'd be interested in your comments. From my own perspective, I think they are again basing their opinions on Induction ONLY and not at the fact that Dr Atkins said which aspects of the regime were NOT suitable for pregnant women.

in DANDR, it does say Atkins is not suitable for pregnant women or those with severe kidney disease.

I think anyone who doesn't research and read enough of the arguments proposed by Dr Atkins, will say the diet is bad. But the way I look at it is, my eating has changed, it is much healthier, I am a happier eater and it is a WOE.

Have a look at these 2 links:

they make an interesting read as they start with doubt and the interview turns around.

I was thinking the other day about all the claims that Atkins increases cholesterol, risk of heart disease, etc. In this era of people suing everyone for everything, is there ever a case where someone sued Atkins Nutritionals, or Dr. Atkins when he was alive, for their heart attack, high cholesterol, stroke, etc.? I can't recall that ever happening. You KNOW the media would jump all over that!

They're learning ALOT of things about women's nutrition and how it affects their babies. In the US, women who are thinking about becoming pregnant are advised to take folic acid supplements because folic acid helps protect against spina bifida and other brain disorders. They already have guidelines on things like choline (a chemical found in egg yolks) and how the lack of choline in a mother's diet badly affects the developing baby.

But as someone said earlier, the weight loss phases of Atkins are not for pregnant or nursing women. As for the nutritional balance of Atkins, it really depends on how you put your menues together. If you rely on lettuce as your sole vegetable, you're not going to get the same nutritional benefits as someone who eats a greater variety of vegetables. The same holds true for the other weight loss phases of Atkins: if you choose to eat the foods with the least amount of nutrition, you cannot expect to have good nutrition.
