  • Binge eating

Ok I just love hard salami. It's one of those things I start and can't stop or to be more honest WON'T stop. So of course I decided to buy some to wrap around a string cheese for a quick breakfast this morning.

Sitting here at my desk I realized I just ate the entire 8 oz. package. That's a freakin' half pound of salami. Geez louise.

Why would such a food have this effect on me??? I don't sit there and eat a whole chicken... ok I've done this with roast, but oh I make a really good roast with garlic slivers inside the meat and provincial herbs and olive oil ahhhhhhhh

I have a love affair with food and I think it's time I get a new love interest.

I am like that with certain foods too...peanuts, popcorn, good chocolates. And those same foods are no longer on my list of foods I will eat. Ever. It can happen with desserts too. I won't even make Atkins friendly desserts because I will nibble til they are gone.

I wish I could give you an answer...except that for me it's just not worth it. I feel sick and disgusted with myself when I binge on something, usually it feels like I'm being punished for my indiscretion. Not that it stops me from falling from time to time, because I do.

        Re: Binge eating

I find it hard to eat proper portions when I eat in front of the TV or computer - my brain doesn't register the 'OK, I'm not hungry anymore' signals as well as if I'm paying attention to my meal rather than other distractions. I think that is caused (for me) by years of eating as much as I wanted of whatever I wanted rather than paying attention to hunger signals.

Like Jill, I just don't buy things that might be a problem to me. Its not easy. Plus, I notice if I am doing something (like using the computer or reading), I can eat and not really notice how much I am eating.

becareful of salami its a processed meat...could have lots of sugars, fillers, sweets, and stuff that ain't good.
try a 100% beef steak , or a hamburger that you made...
the more processed meat i eat , the more i want , you know how in the butchers section its all meat in saran wrap on Styrofoam packages...each more of that and less of the deli section processed meat.
            Good Luck!!!!!!

              Re: Binge eating

You could put the salami and cheese (portions individually wrapped) in the freezer and only take out what you plan to eat that day. If it's for your lunch for example, you could take it out of the freezer and put it in the fridge the night before. Harder to binge on frozen meat and cheese

If you find though that some foods cause portion control, you might want to limit or eliminiate that food.

Thank you all for the excellent feedback. You're quite right about the processed food part... I checked the label and it's loaded with nitrates. Sure it claims less than one carb per 3 slices... but that would make nearly 8 carbs per package, right? Whatta waste of carbs for the day. Heck I coulda had a V8! LOL Ok maybe not a V8 but you catch my drift. I'll not fall in this trap again. Scratching processed meats off my list.

I certainly understand where you are coming from. I portion ours out and send only the portion size to dh at work. I will nibble the portion size, making myself chew really slowly, close my eyes and focus on enjoying it and not just eat it.

It's hard, today I've eaten really well, I've gotten all of my veggies in and had grilled chicken, a hamburger patty, an omelet for breakfast, and still I want something. I hate these days. It's like I'm a bottomless pit. I finally had to break and have some peanut butter (no trans fat)-even though I know I'm not suppose to on induction but one tablespoon with a half of a granola bar (which put me over my carbs 15 carbs finally satisfied me and I don't want anything else. I almost wish I would have eaten this earlier and then I probably wouldn't have eaten so much today.

                  Hang in there!

                    Re: Binge eating

whatsername has a point about eating in front of a screen. One of the tricks I employ (most of the time) is that if I am going to snack, that's what I do. I go to the kitchen, sit down, and eat my snack. It makes you conscious of the fact that you are choosing to eat and keeps you aware of how much. I am much better at deciding what and how much of a snack it will be. I no longer allow myself to eat in front of any screen. Its too easy to allow it to become an automatic feed and I NEVER eat from a package of food. Always take your portion and put it on a plate. If you decide to have more you are actively making that decision--it does give you pause for thought.

                      Re: Binge eating

I totally agree with you about not eating out of a package, China. It is WAY too easy to eat 2, 3, 4 portions if you are just snacking out of a bag or whatever and not keeping up exactly with how much you have already had. I get nuts out of a bag and specifically measure out how many I am having and put the package away completely before I eat the first one.

This also makes me slow down and enjoy them when I eat them, because I look at them and think "oh wow, only 5 more left,"! I do this with anything that is snack-like or that I would be tempted to overeat or has more than just a few carbs. If I really feel deprived when I am measuring/counting the food out, I tell myself "eat these, and if you want to eat more in a little while, come back and get a few more..." but only RARELY does that initial small portion not satisfy me. Therefore it is also helping to teach me portion control as I see how little it often takes, really, to satisfy my urge for something. Probably a third of what I would have THOUGHT it might take.

So far this plan has worked like a charm for me in regards to snack food type items, and really anything else I strongly want to portion-control.

i used to eat these 10 net carb whole wheat wraps back then i did not know about the rungs but i was unable to lose any weight while eating them my weight had 100% stalled for many months and they were just 10 net carbs and really thin too! then i found out whole wheat is a rung 9 food

i cut them out of my diet and started to lose weight again

so a granola bar is most likely a rung 9 food and rung 9 foods spike your blood sugar the most remember not all carbs are the same

and also atkin shakes/bars are no good either the bars contain ingridients of rung 9 or 6

anyways i think you already knew this but was saying it cause you sound like you dont know how much problems half of a granola bar can cause

and if your haveing one of thoughs days again just keep eating acceptable food till you are satisfied thats what i did and i lost all my weight and i eat ALOT of food
