High Protein Diet May Shrink Brain Say Alzheimer's Researchers#

Since I am not an expert and maybe my understanding of it is wrong.....its pretty scary and again something else to make me think about another diet......whats your opinion....

Can't comment on the validity of that "study" but good thing Atkins isn't a high-protein diet.

      Re: New Medical Study

Absolutely - we are on a high fat diet for a reason and if I read the study correctly the mice who ate 60 per cent fat, 30 per cent protein, 10 per cent carbs were fine. This is very close to what we eat on Atkins (induction recommendation is 65 fat, 5 carb, 30 protein).
But I am personally appalled that they feed mice that much protein and then be surprised at the result. Mice (unlike carnivorous) are not genetically fit to eat protein.
And as we usually say - what is true for mice is rarely through for humans. But I guess it means they can get research money to conduct a study on humans.

I think the study proves mice should stick to mice food.

But the study proved that mice that ate on the ATkins plan (60fat, 10 carbs , 30 protein were just fine

Here are the four positions they tested
For 14 weeks (from the age of 4 weeks until 18 weeks) they fed the male and female mice on one of four diets: (1) a regular (reference) diet; (2) a high fat/low carbohydrate diet (60 per cent fat, 30 per cent protein, 10 per cent carbs, by calorie value); (3) a high protein/low carbohydrate diet (60 per cent protein, 30 per cent fat, 10 per cent carbohydrate by calorie value); or (4) a high carbohydrate/low fat diet (60 per cent carbohydrate, 30 per cent protein, 10 per cent fat, by calorie value).
Clearly the Atkins diet is option 2. We know that because we have read the book!!!!!

                  Here is the result
To their surprise, they found that the brains of the mice that had been fed the high protein/low carbohydrate diet were five per cent lighter than those of mice on the other diets, and regions of the hippocampus were less developed.

So that is their 3rd choice right? But the third choice is not how we eat on Atkins. At least not those of us who know what the Atkins diet means
(I have to read the real study to make sure)

Also these tests are done on genetically altered mice. Who are predisposed to react to proteins because they have been altered. Allegedly this is done so scientists can get their results quickly. But it is unclear if the results they get actually also are true for normal mice.

We were discussing a similar study here a bit earlier

                    Re: New Medical Study

It didn't seem to me that the author of the article understood what Atkins was. Therefore, I stopped thinking that any of the conclusions were valid.

Browneye, another thing to consider is that human beings living in the far north have lived for thousands of years on fish, whale and seal - a diet practically devoid of carbs. They certainly do not suffer from an epidemic of Alzheimer's. Personally, I would put much more faith in anecdotal observations of humans than studies of genetically altered mice.

                            Hidden amongst the media hyperbole:

But, it's not yet known if these findings have implications for the human brain. Gandy says this would require double-blind clinical diet trials. "This would be a challenging undertaking, but potentially worthwhile if there is a real chance that the ravages of Alzheimer's might be slowed or avoided through healthy eating," he said. "Such trails will be required if scientists are ever to make specific recommendations about dietary risks for Alzheimer's."

In other words.... this is interesting enough that somebody should look into it, but no conclusions can be drawn yet.
