Is size 16W = 1x in the US of A

HI - I went to Nordstrom and I was able to fit into a 16W. I am wondering if that means I have only gone from 3x to 1x even I have lost approx 60 lbs.

I am a bit confused with the dress sizes...and how much larger is 16W from a regular 16...

Women's sizes in the US are not consistent ... you can wear one size at one store and another size at another store.

I never depend on the size label except as a starting point when shopping.
I have found depending on the style, brand, store, etc, type of garment, (jeans, slacks, blouse, t-shirt) size can vary up to 3 sizes. I just head for my "average size" and then start looking for something I like and then work from there, one size up and down. So don't get too hung up on "garment size", what is important is how you look and feel in the garment.

Please don't be discouraged by this~~~ I'm sure you feel so much better 60 lbs lighter, you are probably able to do so many more things. For me I have went from a size 34/36 to a size 30 and I have lost 73 lbs!!! And I'm not ready to leave the size 30 any time soon.

Once you get into the smaller sizes, I do believe a 15 pound difference would change you from a size 8-10, or 10-12... that is why skinnier people can easy see when they gain 10 pounds but heavier people, 10 pounds doesn't really change anything in the small perspective. For me it took loosing a little more then 50 pounds for "others" to see it on me. Now if I started at 200 lbs and only weighed 150lbs... man o live could you be able to tell.

So to answer you question, yes... you probably only went from a 3x-1x loosing 60 lbs. However, your next 60 lbs will take you from a 1x to a small/medium depending on brand make, ect...

Sizes in the USA, don't get me started. At 252 I was wearing anything from an XL to a 3X, and depending on where and who made them, some 3X's looked like they were made for a child. I'm afraid the only tried and true method is to measure yourself.

So don't let sizes discourage you, and great job on your losses thus far!!

4x = 28,30
3x = 24,26
2x = 20,22
1x = 16,18
XL = 16,18
L = 12,14
M = 8,10
S = 4,6

I've gone from a 26 to a 20. I think of it as a high 3X to a low 2x. And yes, it depends on the brand etc...

Amanda makes a good point. Down to around a size 18, my body needed around 20 pounds off for each size change. As I get smaller, 15 pounds would be enough to take me down a size. I would say your losses are like mine as far as your size goes. You probably need a 16W or 1X on your larger half (mine is the bottom and I still need an 18W) and a Misses XL or 16 on the top half (where I can even wear a 14 Misses in some things) Don't put too much stock in the label. I have a size 10 friend here in CHina and she is an XXL everywhere here because the sizing is so small.

Dear God help me if I ever find myself in China!!! I would need something like a 15X... is there such a thing really? Well.. hmm actually there is, don't know if you all know the store Catherines or not, but they have size 15 panties...

Just got me thinking, now if I was a size 15 panties then I would be about a size 15XL...

Imagine if the sizing was like this:

SO to be honest, I guess if US followed some of the other countries like China, India, Syria, and some others it would really look something like this. Now the problem is "we" would be feel horrible to buy a size 15 on a regular basis and possible they do it just to make money that way Americans get bigger and bigger without really realizing it. I mean so of us get to a point of feeling big, maybe you had to buy that size 18 jeans and was like NO WAY!!! Others, we are just thankful to find clothes anywhere that still fit.

For me I have received gowns and house dresses from Morocco and they are a size 3X and even the arms don't fit, it may get pulled over my head and that is about it.There is Muslim dresses that I can buy at certain Islamic stores, and they are made in (Syria, India, Bangladesh, Ect)... the biggest is usually a 10X and I can't wear them!!!

So yes, I do believe there is more behind this sizing thing!

My point, just aim to be healthy and fit and wear what ever size feels good be it a Small or a 3X, as long as your are healthy that is the main thing.

One last thing... I do believe the weight and the size is fairly close to being accurate, using myself and my family who is all plus size and my sister in laws who are smaller, they seem close. My goal is a size 8/10 which is around 155 pounds so that seems about right. Any opinions.
