I read some time ago something about getting vitamins with low iron for the Atkins WoE. If that's the case, why is low iron recommended?

Taking Centrum multivitamins atm, hope those are ok. Thanks!

Dr. Atkins considered that we get enough iron from the foods we eat when following his plan. Too much iron is toxic.

Thank you Georgina. That makes a lot more sense now I'm going to check how much iron is in the Centrum.

Since Dr. Atkins recommended a multi-vitamin with NO iron, any iron in the Centrum is "too much".

You should get a senior multi. Iron free.

Thanks Atkinsgal, I didn't know that about the senior multivitamins. Will be picking one up today or tomorrow then. I will go re-read the section on vitamins in the book too.

The mention of iron is in Chapter 11.

              Re: Vitamins and Iron

I've actually had blood tests in the past while doing Atkins where my iron level was too high without even taking a multi-vitamin. Then they have to run more test to make sure its just circulating iron and not building up in my organs (never has shown that). So what I do is faithfully donate blood every 6 weeks, keeps my iron level in check and saves many lives, something to think about.

                  Red meats contain Iron.

Yes Barb. MY DH has hemochromatosis (sp) in his family history. Its when you body allows the iron to build up. It can do organ damage and raises your cholesterol and triglycerides. So too much Iron is not a great thing. He has to donate blood too. I guess that's the only way to prevent the buildup.

                      Re: Vitamins and Iron

I have probably said this before but I find that I personally do not get as much Iron on Atkins as I did before Atkins. This is a combination of the fact that I ate a lot of iron fortified foods (cereals and breads) and probably a lot more food. Now even though I do eat a fair bit of meat as protein I am not really close to my daily requirement. I have quite a severe need to get loads of iron every month so I watch this carefully. But I agree that unless your annual physical shows that you need extra iron you should stick to the recommendations that Atkins give in the book.

There were some surprises for me too Especially the sea veggies, I guess that would be seaweed? I don't have that very often, but I've enjoyed seaweed salad before.

I got a new multi-vitamin, it's iron-free (and the size of a horse pill!). Also has some fish oil and other supplements. Only thing I'm worried about is the ginko biloba...that's given me headaches before, so I'll see how this one works out.
