I'm having a rough day today...really rough, and I'm super irritated. (almost time for TOM).

I was wondering if anybody is taking any diet pills, and which ones? I'm feeling very helpless and overwhelmed, and wonder if psychologically it would help if I started taking some diet pills.

Well, I'm going to take my (very) cranky self for a nap now. Hopefully the headache and foul mood will be gone when I wake up.

        Psychologically?

For weight loss, you don't need diet pills on Atkins.

          Re: Diet pills

I am holding on for dear life here. It just feels like the only little bit of control I have left, since my whole life is governed by my kids and husband, and I love them dearly, is slowly slipping away. I have a wonderful husband, and very clingy kids, and this week it's just a bit too much for me to handle.

I guess I thought that since my weight loss is so slow that the pills would speed it up and I would drop 10lbs over night. I'm discouraged. How on earth do I boost my metabolism?? I'm only aiming for about 2lbs per week, but when you don't even lose that it's VERY disappointing.

First off, "aiming" for a specific number of pounds per week is going to disappoint you.

Statistically, women lose at the rate of 1/2 to 1 pound per week.

Some weeks you'll lose more, some weeks you'll lose less.

            Atkins isn't about "gimmicks" ...

I'm quite fond of the Oprah saying that if there was a magic pill, she would have found it.

Rather than thinking about "boosting" your metabolism, think about healing the metabolism you have ... rather than trying to rush the process, learn how to do Atkins for live, instead of a "diet".

A diet pill isn't going to give you any control.

Guess what! This is why most diets fail. Nobody wants to put in the real effort and patience it takes to lose weight and keep it off. Yes there are days when you are discouraged and depressed. Yes there are days that you want to throw in the towel. But thats when you have to dig deeper and remind yourself that it isnt about the number. Its a cross country marathon with sidesteps and backtracks and sometimes losing the trail but the goal is to get to the finish. Its not a sprint where you zip there and its done. You have had some great advice. Learn to be patient and be willing to do this as long as it takes to do it right.

Everyone has really crummy days. I lose about a half pound a week. Yesterday totally sucked. But that was yesterday. But I am not bailing. I know if I stick to it it will work albeit slowly. I am 65 pounds lighter from my high weight because of this woe, but it didn't come off fast or easy.

                Re: Diet pills

Personally I boost metabolism with cardio exercise. Walking is a fabulous way to boost metabolism, and it's an awesome way to involve your children in meeting your goals.

I can only speak from my own experience, but diet pills tend to make me more cranky, even jittery, interrupt my sleep patterns, and just give me a general malaise that's not good news. Also I can't help but think of my best friend's sister who still suffers heart damage from phenphen. Sure she got a check from her settlement, but that doesn't give her a new heart.

What I love about Atkins is that it makes for a healthy way of living. I consider it what I hope and pray will be a permanent life change.

Maybe take your children for a 15 minute walk just today and see if it helps? Exercise is a natural way to get those endorphins pumping!

It would be great if there was some pill to pop, I really agree with that. And sure there some days I wish I could wave a magic wand. But the tough reality is that this takes hard work, will power and patience. And you have to follow the rules of the diet.
Yes there are hard days. We all have them. Maybe a walk outside would help you get away from things a bit.

                    Re: Diet pills

Hi Linda, I hope by now you're feeling more optimistic. I've tried lots of diet pills and sadly most all of them are just empty promises.

Up your water intake, make sure you take your vitamins, and increase your exercise some (it's what will boost your metabolism.) We all can get discouraged, especially when the weight loss is slow. Everyone is unique, and will lose differently. Don't set your sights too high for yourself. Take it as it comes. Sometimes you will see fast loses, and sometimes slow. Many times just when we are about to give up, something happens to change our minds. Don't be so hard on yourself. You can do this. It will get better with time. You DO have control.

Also, have you taken your measurements? You could be losing inches. Do your clothes feel like they're getting looser?

If - psychologically - you really want to take a pill - are you on a good multivitamin? I started taking one a couple of months ago, and it *makes* me feel better!! Especially if you are induction, some of your nutrients could be lacking.... I take Centrum Weight Loss (has extra of some of the nutrients)....

Good luck to you! I know that it can be frustrating! Make sure you are taking measurements, as well as checking your weight. You'll find - sometimes - that you lose inches, instead of losing pounds. Isn't that what it's all about? I really don't care if the numbers on the scale changes, so long as I can fit back into THOSE jeans!! lol!

Thanks for that, i know it wasnt directed at me, but i am havin one of those weeks and this is helpful to read late at night .

Right now its late at night here and i am feeling down because i am trying SO hard, but its going no where for the last 2 weeks. So i came looking for some similar stories to see what others do. I wont give up, but i will keep tryin to understand how all of this works, keep eating whole foods and keep counting carbs.

If I get really stuck, I jump on the bike, go for a walk or do something/anything positive.

                            Re: Diet pills

You have to REALLY want this Linda, you are in control of your own destiny. There is no pill out there that's going to help you- you have to do this through sheer willpower. Since Atkin's itself controls your appetite and cravings, what is your major breaking point or hurdle you can't seem to get over, is it only the weight loss stall? You have to stop thinking so much about the weight loss, it will come if you are following this "diet" correctly. You are getting healthy and that should be what keeps you going and keeps you motivated to continue. Try moving on to OWL and adding some more vegetables to your meals- it worked for me. Good luck and hang in there okay??

Started this diet on Sun 4/26/09

50 lbs gone on Sun 9/27/09

Well its been over a year now and I am currently on maintenance and still trying to adjust to the "new" ME. No major struggles to report, just livin' day to day.

                              Re: Diet pills

I just wanted to add that it might also help to have your menu reviewed periodically here. I've sometimes discovered (and some others here too) that what I was eating (or not eating) was slowing my weight loss down. I made that realization recently when I figured out I was eating too close to my CCLL during OWL. Tracking foods and things using Fitday is invaluable to helping do Atkins. I've discovered that dairy and things like cream cheese stall or slow my weight loss for instance.

Still, I only lose 1-2 lbs a week, if that, and hit plateaus sometimes even when doing everything 100% correct.

Also, diet pills will be doing something to your body with chemicals. If pills worked, we wouldn't have to change the way we eat, would we?

                              Good luck!
