    Re: I fell off!!!

    >> I really feel like after every meal I need something sweet. I dont know that that feeling will go away?>>

I used to be that way.

The feeling won't go away if you keep feeding your want though ... and that's what your "feeling" is ... it's a want.

This may be a lifetime battle for you (regardless of whether you're doing Atkins or not) ... or the desire may go away.

I know I no longer have the "want".

    >> Can i still drink coffee? 2 cups? black with splenda.>>

Yes. Keep in mind there's a limit of 3 servings of sweetener per day. Georgiana's advice is good though.

    <<is a week each time good?<<

    That's your call.

    >> Can I really eat meats liberally so that if I am feeling like I need to eat instead of reaching for something bad I can reach for a steak or hamburger patty or something?>>

    Yes.

      Re: I fell off!!!

You didn't fall off... you jumped

Most people who fail at diets do so because they think the diet isn't working... I think you can see with your quick 5 lb gain that the diet was working, just not to your specifications...

You can try low cal for a bit, lose your 5 lbs again, but then you will probably be stuck again at the same weight, and have to work hard to go beyond that number, and it will be hard and it will take a long time and a commitment from you to get to the number you want to be at.

The foods on a low cal diet are more fun to eat, but I just couldn't take being hungry all the time. And as soon as I started eating 'normal' again, the weight comes back on... same as with Atkins... 'diets' don't work because you have to eat that way for the rest of your life... low cal, low fat, low carb, they are all the same...

You might do better on the 'biggest loser' diet... low cal, low fat, complex carbs, small portions, good grains, heavy exercise, but again, it's a commitment. No pigging out because you aren't losing fast enough and feel as if all of your deprivation is for nothing...

Let us know what you decide...

          Enough for what?

          coffe w/splenda
          One serving of sweetener.

1 cup of coffee black w/splenda
          Two servings of sweetener.

2 eggs w/1tbsp cream cheese and 1tbs butter, splenda, cinnamon
          Three servings of sweetener.

          protein shake w/3carbs
          Four servings of sweetener.

And what are the ingredients in this protein shake?

          sugar free jello
          Five servings of sweetener.

Sweeteners are limited to 3 daily. But as I've said, it would be better for you to kill your sweet tooth. That means you should avoid sweeteners for a while.

          spinach parmesan dip
          Are you making this yourself?

If not, what are the ingredients?

hmmm ok what is a good post workout food?
I know it's important to eat after you workout. But I dont know what to eat while on atkins because I heard you are supposed to have protein, carbs and sugar?

I can cut out the eggs w/splenda
I can cut out the jello
            and even the protein shake
I want to try to keep the coffee but will cut it out if its becomes a problem

weighing - enough to give myself enough time in between weighs people say every day is not good.

Thanks so much for all your replies by the way. i really do appreicate it. It helps.

              You don't need sugar.

I usually exercise in the morning, before breakfast, and have breakfast as my "post workout food".

You can have anything from the Acceptable Foods List for a snack. Meat, veggies...

Okay, I see what you meant. Weighing weekly does not guarantee you will see some weight loss every week. I had months with no weight loss. It can happen.

I didn't need to stay "motivated"... as in, not being tempted to quit Atkins. Once I had decided that Atkins will be my new lifestyle (instead of just another diet), it didn't matter how many pounds, if any, came off each week.

but i though our muscles need carbs too for post workout?
You want protein. And you can have a few carbs with it, if you wish. There are yummy veggies to choose from.

                    Re: I fell off!!!

motivation - how I feel is great motivation. I only lost one pound last month. This rather surprised me, since I was gaining/losing the same couple of pounds - I didn't realize it was only 1. But, I felt great all month. I felt I was getting thinner, I could feel it in my clothes. Then, when I measured on 11/1 - I found I had lost 5.5 inches during that same month. Now that's motivation!

You stay motivated because you're not "dieting".

If you're looking for your motivation to come from the scale, then maintenance will be deadly for you.

                        Re: I fell off!!!

The main ingredient we are looking for in a post workout meals is protein. Protein provides amino acids, and amino acids are the building blocks of our muscles. You want to get around 30 to 50 grams of protein as soon as possible following your workout. Near the end of your workout, your glycogen (energy) stores are depleted. As a result, your body starts to breakdown and use protein for energy. You body's primary stores of protein are in your muscles.

I found some info on protein and how much is in foods:

Shortcut: An ounce of meat or fish has approximately 7 grams of protein. Beef

                              • Hamburger patty, 4 oz – 28 grams protein
                              • Steak, 6 oz – 42 grams
                              • Most cuts of beef – 7 grams of protein per ounce

                              Chicken

                              • Chicken breast, 3.5 oz - 30 grams protein
                              • Chicken thigh – 10 grams (for average size)
                              • Drumstick – 11 grams
                              • Wing – 6 grams
                              • Chicken meat, cooked, 4 oz – 35 grams

                              Fish

                              • Most fish fillets or steaks are about 22 grams of protein for 3 ½ oz (100 grams) of cooked fish, or 6 grams per ounce
                              • Tuna, 6 oz can - 40 grams of protein

                              Pork

                              • Pork chop, average - 22 grams protein
                              • Pork loin or tenderloin, 4 oz – 29 grams
                              • Ham, 3 oz serving – 19 grams

                              • Canadian-style bacon (back bacon), slice – 5 – 6 grams

                              Eggs and Dairy

                              • Egg, large - 6 grams protein
                              • Milk, 1 cup - 8 grams
                              • Cottage cheese, ½ cup - 15 grams

                              • Soy milk, 1 cup - 6 -10 grams
                              • Most beans (black, pinto, lentils, etc) about 7-10 grams protein per half cup of cooked beans
                              • Soy beans, ½ cup cooked – 14 grams protein
                              • Split peas, ½ cup cooked – 8 grams

                              Nuts and Seeds

                              • Pecans, ¼ cup – 2.5 grams
                              • Sunflower seeds, ¼ cup – 6 grams
                              • Pumpkin seeds, ¼ cup – 8 grams
                              • Flax seeds – ¼ cup – 8 grams

How much protein do we need?

Our protein needs depend on our age, size, and activity level. The standard method used by nutritionists to estimate our minimum daily protein requirement is to multiply the body weight in kilograms by .8, or weight in pounds by .37. This is the number of grams of protein that should be the daily minimum. According to this method, a person weighing 150 lbs. should eat 55 grams of protein per day, a 200-pound person should get 74 grams, and a 250-pound person, 92 grams.
