  • Question about exercise and Induction

    Hi All:

I have a quick question regarding exercise and induction. I'm a runner, and currently training for a marathon. However, I find that I am not having enough energy lately to get through my longer runs. I'm running 3-6 miles a couple times during the week and longer run on the weekend. I ran out of steam this past weekend on my longer run, but was wondering if you all have any suggestions. I'm down around 5-6lbs after 1 week and I feel great otherwise.
Do you think I should go into OWL to try to get a level of carb intake that matches my level of exercise, or stay in the induction phase for the next week? Just curious.

Cool when are you planning to run your marathon?
Are you following a special training system

You re started a week ago?
I think this could go both ways. Some us can utilize ketosis and fat for all the exercise we do but I do think it may take longer than one week to make our process effective enough. Some people however do seem to need some more carbs than others. How many net carb are you currently eating?

      Hi Liv!

Here are some answers to your questions.

I'm running the marathon in February and yes, I'm following a special training system. This is my first full marathon, but I've run several races before: 5ks, 10ks and a 1/2 marathon as well. So, I'm not new to running. I've just not trained before doing atkins.

Yes, last Thursday. I did induction a couple of months ago, but stayed on induction too long and I think I burned out. This time, I had only the intention of staying on induction for the two weeks, but like I said, as my milage is picking up, I'm peetering out.

I'm eating what is listed in the book, but it seems low.
A typical day is something like this:
2 or 3 eggs with smoked salmon or some kind of sausage
      1/2 cup spinach
      1/2 avocado

chicken with mayo on top of ~2 cups of greens with olive oil dressing( my own recipe)

      snack afterwork/pre workout
like beef jerky and a little cheese

      dinner
      some protein-fish chicken or beef
1 cup of kale or brussels sprouts with butter

I drink all my water and then some ~80oz and I don't really drink coffee anymore on most occasions, but if I do, I like it black.

The reason I'm on atkins is: I'm an avid exerciser and I work out far too hard to be as heavy as I am. My doctor has told me that I do a great job, but she thinks I am insulin resistant and it is just harder for me to lose. I crossfit, run, lift weights, and do yoga sparingly, but still have a high body fat percentage, and I'm looking for what works.

      hope this helps!

Re: Question about exercise and Induction

How much do you want to lose? I am trying to guess from your ticker.

Your body may not be using the ketosis process effective yet. We have had several members here who have run plenty of marathon on Atkins but they have not been eating induction level carbs - probably around 50 or so. I run 3 or 6 mile runs every week (I am not training for anything) and I do just fine. I ran on induction too without any problem but then again I don't really watch the clock so if I have a slow day it does not bother me. I don't know what is more important to you this week your run times or sticking to induction?

If it was me I would up the fat quite a bit - (plenty of butter and dressing on everything and maybe some coconut oil on the side) and see if that did not help. I would mix up my veggies a lot more and eat more of the higher carb ones. Kale, spinnach and lettuce do not add to much (actually probably add up to more or less nothing in net carbs) - so if you have other things like tomato, onion, jicama, pumpkin, pepper etc you would have more carbs and still do induction fine.
And yes I would add a lot more veggies then the first week of OWL and still keep my fat up there.
You may have to experiment. (But fat rocks )

Yes the fat will give you more energy. But I would still move onto OWL 1 too. I find that in OWL I feel better and I work out about 1.5 to 2 hours a day.

Re: Question about exercise and Induction

Thanks, guys! I will do a little experimenting and see what happens. The real test will be on Saturday when I run 8 miles. I'll try adding more dense allowable carbs in before then and see if it makes a difference. If so, then I'll stay on an additional week on induction. If not, then I'll move into OWL on Sunday.
It is going to be the TOM soon and so I cant tell if what I'm doing is working- like i'm all of a sudden a little swollen and puffy, but like I said on my earlier post, other than lack of energy when I am running, I feel good.

And, I actually ran 3+ miles last night and it felt pretty good. I was slower than usual, by a couple of minutes, but felt like I could be bouncing back.
            Hmm. Only time will tell.
            Peace out! Lizzy B
