  • I'm confused

Well I finally have good news to share. I lost some weight. .
But now I am confused. previously I listed my start weight at 355. But now as I post this I think that it was 345 instead. But I don't know why I would put 355 in 2 different places on my profile. I mean surely I haven't lost 30 pounds already. But 20 pounds for sure. I know when I started Atkins again I was very depressed and I know that when I stepped on the scale I was shocked by how much I had let myself go. That is what got me started on Atkins again. But now I think back and I am not sure about my true start weight. I just really don't remember. But why would I have put 355??? I don't know. I guess the bottom line is, I lost some weight. My pants are loose, I have to cinch up my belt, people have noticed, and finally I have noticed. I feel so much better now and it has gotten alot easier. I have to work on doing more excercise. That is the one area I am lacking in. Although the food is not as much an issue as it use to be. Thanks for all that has helped me here. I changed my profile to say my start weight is 345. So that is what I will base my results from . Now, one question. I am looking for a sugar free syrup. Some I have found have sugar alcohol listed as an ingredient that is deducted from carbs to get net carbs. Have anyone seen this?? And is it really something that can be deducted from gross carbs?? And do any of you have a certain brand that you use? Thanks for your answers.

I don't use sugar-free syrup, but the gist behind deducting sugar alcohol carbs (or fiber carbs, for that matter) from gross carbs is that the carbs from those sources have negligible impact on blood sugar. And that's one of the ultimate goals of the Atkins WOE/WOL - maintaining stable, healthy blood sugar levels.

I've never seen one without sugar alcohols.

What do you need it for?

I wanted to make a flax pancake and put a little syrup on it. My kids had pancakes the other day and they looked really good. So I was looking for a substitute. I made a pork rind pizza the other day when they were having pizza and OMG........it was awesome. I found if I can mimick what others in my family are having then it helps me not feel "left out". Which I don't feel "left out" very often nowadays. Everyone has backed me up and have been helping me stay on track. It has really helped that "I" have noticed that I have dropped some weight. That just makes me want to push harder for more weight loss. I just started looking for SF syrup and seen sugar alcohols under the carb counts. But then one label counted it in toward net carbs. Carbs were 17 gms and after putting in for sugar alcohols the net carbs were 2gms. I have just never heard of sugar alcohols and was wondering if it was really calculated into net carbs like dietary fiber is.

No it isn't like dietary fiber. Some people can use sugar alcohols and some can't. YOu would be much better off not eating them.

My advice is to create a new food life, rather than trying to recreate the low carb version of what you used to eat! In the long run, you'll be better off.

Here's some information about sugar alcohols:

Hmmm...my comment was limited to why sugar alcohols were deducted from gross carbs not stating that they were in some way equivalent. Call off the dogs, sirrah!

DANDR 2002 page 128 - "...certain sugar alcohols such as maltitol do not affect blood sugar and are acceptable."

DANDR 2002 page 75 - "...[fiber] does not raise your blood sugar level the way carbohydrates typically do."

                  Re: I'm confused

Regardless of how sugar alcohols affect blood sugar or don't, I know that anytime in past years when I have tried things with sugar alcohol in them I don't lose hardly any weight. If I was going to use something with them, I would do so very sparingly for a while until I determined if it caused any problems like that or not.

This is just from my own experience... to me, it isn't worth the slowdown/stop of weight loss to have something that tastes good for 5 minutes. Maybe it won't affect you that way.

Which is why I don't use them personally - the flavor is not worth a possible stall. I think we all can agree that what works for one may not work for another (and vice versa), and in that light, I'm okay with folks finding the groove that works for them. That's not a criticism of posting about one's experiences, either. Reading about others' experiences can be quite valuable as one makes his/her way through the phases, and Night Stalker will certainly benefit from the caveat!

                      Re: I'm confused

Thats why I like coming to this forum. There is always someone that has an answer and good advice. I agree I don't think its worth the risk of a stall. So I don't think I will try it. I haven't noticed any real loss at all until just a few days ago. I think sometimes we are the last ones to notice, such is my case. I don't want to slow down my weight loss with a stall like that. As far as mimmicking a certain meal.....I'm sure that all of us have said, man if I could have a bite of that again. Doesn't mean I'm going to have that bite, however if I found something that is close to it in our WOL then I would like to have it, such as the pork rind pizza. I mean how many people absolutely does not want pizza???? I know I know. But I wanted it and found a way to "mimmick" it to satisfy my craving and still be in our WOL. The syrup was an idea that I can say "I don't want nor need that". Its like giving up cokes. I haven't had a single problem about not having them. I don't want nor need them. As always, thank you all for your responses. This is truely a great place to come to when one needs advice.
