Can you offer to bring something?

    Can you offer to cook?

Can you offer to take them out to eat?

My hub and I went to stay with some friends this summer at their cottage. The friends mom was there also and liked to make full meals, every meal. Very non-atkins. I just ate my own breakfast away from the group and had coffee at the table. Lunch and dinner, I offered to make salad. That way I always had my vegetables and usually there was meat - so I was good!

I would pack a big cooler and offer to contribute to the meals.

Good idea about making salad. I am hoping I can get them to go out at least once, but sometimes they get a little homebound. I am not sure if they will let me cook. It doesn't help that my father-in-law is on a low fat diet for medical reasons. Not easy having two people in one family with different medical needs (I have diabetes type II)

Hmmm, that is a tough one!

            Two thoughts to consider:

            1) talk to MIL, ask if you can plan together to make low-fat friendly, diabetic friendly meals (I'd totally understand that this might be impossible or uncomfortable!)
            or
            2) bring "emergency food" - cooked chicken/bacon/cheese that you can add to a salad to make a meal if something totally inappropriate (like pasta or something) is served.

Either way, you don't have to say "Atkins" or even "low-carb" if you don't want to. "Sugar-free" and "unrefined/unprocessed" cover most of it

              Re: Trip to the inlaws

I think I am going to take your advice and take some of my own food. Thankfully we have some leftovers from tonight, so that should work for the next two lunches. Hopefully we can make some nice low fat fish with veggies for dinner. I think I might be able to work that! Thanks everyone!

When I go to mine - I bring eggs - that I can boil up to have for snack. Tuna and mayo - if I really cannot partake in the food I can have this. And I bring bacon. Because I like it Suggest a meal of roasted chicken - you can add some butter to your portion and it could be lean enough for your FIL. You can use left overs to make chef salad (use the eggs, bacon and some lettuce etc)

y'all got such good ideas. I guess it is good to get advice from people who have already been there and done that!

The trip went well. I took all of your advice. I brought my own food (some left overs), my own snacks, and we even ate out once. Thanks for the ideas.

Glad to hear it went well. Dealing with those kinds of things for the first time is kind scary...but it gets easier with time. Congrats on planning ahead & sticking with your plan

Well done for planning ahead and getting through the 'ordeal' with flying colours

As Julie said, the first time is scary, but it gets easier the more often you do it
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
