My usual response to these types of comments... which thankfully I don't get very often...

"Eating all that meat and butter and stuff isn't good for you, you know..."

ME: "Neither was weighing 351 pounds when I was eating low fat processed food... I'll take my chances with the butter and chicken and steak. At least I'll feel good and enjoy my meals until I die."

        Re: Oh, the moronic comments...

I've had to curb my husband's enthusiasm when we go out to eat.

I've come to find that waitresses always have to chime in whenever he used to explain that I'm on Atkins.

I asked him (not so nicely) to stop it. It's a PITA to have to stick up for the diet in front of someone who has been thin their whole life, and esp. at a restaurant.

So he stopped it for a few weeks, and now he's back at it again. I know he's proud of me, but it really chaps my hide. When I explain that I can't have sugar/white flour, etc., the wait staff notes it and that's that. The minute you mention THE A WORD they take it as an "OK" to spout whatever.

          Re: Oh, the moronic comments...

I don't say I'm on a diet if I am doing special requests at a restaurant. For one, they often want to comment on the diet, and whether it's good or bad, I really don't want or need to hear it nor explain it or justify it.

Secondly, instead of telling them I am on a diet, I tell them I have food allergies. I think they take it more seriously that way, and with the way I react to many sugars (they make me literally sick a lot of times, esp corn syrup) and processed starches (they make me gain ridiculously out of proportion and retain fluid), I basically DO consider myself allergic/sensitive to these items, thus I don't feel badly saying it.

Oh, I had a good one yesterday... was stuck talking to a total stranger, elderly lady, just making chitchat talk killing a few minutes. She mentioned she had lost a lot of weight. So I mentioned I had also. She asked me how I did it, and against my better judgement, LOL, I said Atkins. Her reply was...

Oh, that diet is so dangerous. I know a woman who lost a lot of weight on Atkins, and then a few years later she got liver cancer and died.

I almost laughed, but I tried to be polite and not argue with her unscientific assumption that the elderly lady's (apparently temporary) diet of low carb had caused her to get liver cancer years later. I just said, "oh really, I will have to look into that..."

She later informed me she had lost HER weight with stomach surgery, which she also informed me had caused her to have chronic diarhhea ever since (years now) to the point she has to wear large pads 24/7 (she did not seem upset by this at all). TMI.

Man, a big hospital bill for the surgery, chronic diarrhea and wearing pads the rest of my life... that sounds SO much better than eating low carb, doesn't it?

Last week in work I was speaking to a guy who was upset that he was now a 42 inch waist and none of his clothes were fitting.

I suggested that he tried Atkins and he was absolutely horrified, stating there were 'long-term health implications' with Atkins!

Now, he was saying this while tucking into a battered sausage and chips and by and large his diet consists of crisps, chocolate and takeaways!! lol

It really makes you laugh when you think of the irony.....

Oh, can't you see the logic?

There are rumored long-term health implications eating low carb style (despite the fact that our ancestors ate this way throughout nearly all of human history before the rise of the agricultural lifestyle in many societies and accompanying increase in grain consumption), versus the scientifically proven long-term health implications of being obese and eating junk and crap most of the time... you know, junk like battered sausage and crisps, which though I'm not familiar with Scottish food/descriptions, I have a pretty good idea of what that is...

                  Makes sense to me ;-)

i remember I was watching a documentary about a hospital which specialised in gastric bands and weight loss surgery.

The head specialist on the programme said that all the patients were there because of 'white food' and basically proclaimed 'white food' as the devil. The white food he was referring to was sugar, bread, salt and all other refined carbohydrates-basically the building blocks of a 'healthy low-fat diet'.

Anyhoo, back to battered sausages-definitely a scottish delicacy with a large frankenfurter sausage being smothered with batter then deep fried until crisp-yum!! (Not!!)

The PR machine that has maligned 'Atkins' works very well...I started Aktin (albeit cautiously) because a friend of mine that is level headed and has a very 'science' based thinking process suggested it....and i was cautious...being a diabetic even moreso...now you can't shut me up singing its praises...Im off all my insulin....I have energy I couldnt be happier...people are noticing...what makes me laugh is...as soon as people ask how you lost the weight you see their face change.....

My reply is....um I was morbidly obese...on 4 injections oh insulin a day....I couldnt walk around the block...my back and knees and hips and feet were ALWAYS sore...um which part is the bad part?

They usually don't have an answer....plus Im standing there looking healthy!

Strangest thing I just flew 4000km to see my sister in Sydney last weekend and I also saw a long time friend...both their reations were the same...you look so healthy!...They are the people I trust!

                        Re: Oh, the moronic comments...

Of course they work to malign Atkins - there is little profit to the food manufacturers in whole foods, unprocessed foods, foods not full of preservatives and thus actually have nutrients in them which could spoil and drain some profits. There is a lot more money to be made for them from a bag of flavored potato chips than a bag of fresh green beans, or frozen battered and seasoned pre-cooked chicken strips versus plain fresh raw chicken. Grains and starches are cheap and full of potential profit from processing.

Malign away, I ain't buying it. I do look forward to more plain vegetables, fruits, and a few beans as I get close to goal weight... in the meantime, I can't see that I'm suffering too much with my nearly 80 pound loss since I quit eating the junk made by food manufacturers that makes up the majority of the western diet.

I have found the same thing. People are like 'wow, you look great!' and then I tell them it's Atkins and they get all concerned. BUT 95% of the time it is because they think Atkins is just eggs, meat and cheese - NO VEGETABLES! It bothers me in two ways - 1) that they think I'm dumb enough to do a diet with no vegetables and 2)that people think it is all just meat and cheese and eggs because someone they know has done 'Atkins' this way.

I usually end up shrieking 'I eat more veg this way than I did before' (and I have always liked veg), and then they just assume I used to live on burgers - which is so not the case.

                            Sooo frustrating!
