  • Help????

    Hello everyone,

I have been on atkins diet now just short of a week.
I am not sure if I am following it correctly and was hoping you would be able to advise me correctly.

My typical daily intake has been:-

Chicken fillett or ham or beef, I have 2/3 cups of coffee per day with cream NO SUGAR.

I do however drink diet coke, when looking at the ingredients it says zero carbs and zero sugar, is this ok or is there hidden dangers in it?

I dont seem to feel any different although friends have commented that they can see a difference, I really want to do this diet correctly and was hoping someone could advise if what I am doing is correct. When looking at the different websites there seems to be mixed messages about what you can or cant eat. I look forward to your responses

Did you read Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002)?

    See advice above.

Is this it? Chicken, ham, beef, coffee and Diet Coke?

    What about veggies?

    Water?

when looking at the ingredients it says zero carbs and zero sugar, is this ok or is there hidden dangers in it?
Sweeteners are limited to 3 servings per day. A serving of diet soda is usually 8 oz.

That's why you need the book.

In the meantime, this thread will help you with the Induction phase: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...tion-faqs.html

It is not a substitute for the book though!

Chicken fillett or ham or beef
By the way, Atkins is a high fat diet, not high protein. During Induction, 60-70% of our calories should come from fat, 5-10% from carbohydrate and 25-30% from protein.

And make sure you are consuming enough calories. Undereating, either calories or carbs, will likely interfere with weight loss.

Right now, your diet is nutritionally bankrupt. This is not how Atkins should be!

        Yeah what she said.

I liked the simplicity of induction, but added a couple bags of salad greens a week plus broccoli florets, cauliflower florets, baby spinach, onions, tomato... basically turned the meat courses into chef salads. Also be sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, and I found that drinking even more helps. The diet coke can cause a stall in your weight loss so careful careful. Also, be sure to exercise and take a good multivitamin. I've come to see "doing Atkins" as a way of life and a permanent change. Induction certainly isn't permanent, but once in ongoing weightloss if practiced correctly this turns into a very healthy way of eating.

          Re: Help????

Like Georgiana said, the book is invaluable. The stickies can give you a good start too. This board follows the 2002 Ed. of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. It is the last book published while Dr. Atkins was alive. He refined his diet over his lifetime/career, so there are differences between this book and the one published in 1972. After his death, the Atkins corporation changed the rules of the diet to allow their products...remember - they are a corporation - they want to make $$$$

This, plus general misunderstanding, misconceptions and lack of information/research account for the different rules you will find on different websites.

There is no legitamate phase of, or version of Atkins that I have heard of that excludes veggies - we are limited in the types of veggies we can eat (see the list of foods acceptable for induction), but veggies are required on Atkins.

I hope you get informed and follow the diet correctly - it does work Best wishes for successful & healthy losses,

The ones on the Acceptable Food List for Induction ... Chapter 11 in your copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002)!

You are reading the book, right?

If you're not (and you really must if you want to be successful), you can look here:

Having vegetables only at one meal isn't a good idea.

You may need more than 8 glasses of water.

And to be honest ... that's not very much food. I would starve on that!

Just keep in mind that Atkins is not a quick fix. It's a way of eating for life.

                I decaff coffee with cream
Cream is limited during Induction. Make sure you stay within that limit (see the Acceptable Foods List).

                  Re: Help????

Spreading your veggies (carbs) out throughout the day, and eating them with fat and/or protein will limit the effect they have on your blood sugar. Eating them all at once can cause your blood sugar to spike, which causes cravings, etc (there is a whole page of symptoms in the book).
There is a minimum of 3 cups of veggies per day on Atkins - either 3 cups from the list of "salad" veggies or 2 cups "salad" veggies & 1 cup "other" veggies. The lists are in a sticky post/in the book.
