  • Need advice on induction and nursing baby

Hello all! Happy to find this board and all the support it seems to offer!
My story (short version). I did Atkins about 5 years ago and lost a lot of weight really fast..stayed on induction for about 3 and half weeks..got to my goal...kept it off ..around a 6 months..slowly gained it all back...THEN, I had two babies in less than a year and half..(Type 2 diabetic before and terrible, impossible to control blood sugar during). After my daughter 5 and half months ago...I've lost like 45 or so pounds mainly from eating better and breastfeeding. (the diabetes was gone right after my daughter...God intervened )
Now I'm stuck...a pound or two here and there...
Anyway, I want to do induction and need to lose this weight fast! My cholesterol and triglycerides are both over 300!!! My blood pressure has been very elevated as well. Doc wanted to put me on meds for all but couldn't, because I'm a nursing Mom. I agreed to diet and exercise but it isn't going very well! My daughter is eating more solids and only nurses occasionally and I have been giving her formula occasionally. She seems to do better on the formula. (been a long rocky road with reflux, lactose intolerance ..possibly undeveloped tummy)....(she is the only one of my 3 I haven't nursed the full first year but she has sooo many gastrial problems..the formula helps with her bowels.) I have read a lot of conflicting stories on here about nursing and induction (and online in general.) I found two such stories of women that tested their b.milk for ketones and it was tiny traces and lots in urine..and I know it is advised to do OWL by the book....HELP!!!!
Before I start i need some info pronto!!!!
boy..glad that was the SHORT version LOL!

    THANKS!

Re: Need advice on induction and nursing baby

The reason it is recommended not to breastfeed is because the only studies that observe ketosis in pregnancy or breastfeeding are in uncontrolled diabetics who are in ketoacidosis, not the same thing as ketosis.

There are NO studies that show the safety of burning ketones and its effect on babies (either in utero or breast feeding). We do know that ketones are found in breast milk. Babies may have a different threshold of tolerating ketones than adults, maybe not, but I'm sure you do not want your child to be the guinea pig!

You can be very comfortable with ketosis and fat-burning but you might not want to subject your baby to an unknown factor that "might or might not be harmful".

Because we do not have long term studies validating the safety of ketones as a source of energy for babies, Atkins does not recommend following a ketogenic (Atkins) diet during this time of your life.

It is possible that you may lose weight following the maintenance phase of Atkins however it is not recommended to follow any weight loss plan during this time because you need the energy/nutrients while breastfeeding.

Keep in mind that you will not breastfeed for the rest of your life. So when you stop feeding, you can go back on Induction.

As msanjelpie pointed out, none of the weight loss phases of Atkins should be done by pregnant women or nursing mothers.

I hope you don't plan to do the same this time. You should move through all the phases on Atkins rather than stay on Induction until you reach goal. That way you'll not only lose weight, but learn how to maintain it too!

Do you have a copy of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002)?

i believe the matainence part of atkins would work more than good for nurseing moms 80 carbs a day so you could easily get lots of nutrients for you and the baby

also Breast-feed as long as possible, preferably 2 years or longer. You are producing the best baby food and toddler dietary supplement ever made.

here is lots of great info for moms

also the vitamin K2 MK-4 i think is only found in a human mothers breast milk and organic animals another thing the average baby formula is missing

Thank you for the advice! I've really been thinking about this a lot today. With my health how it is and , my baby seems to FEEL better on the formula.... (no screaming with tummy aches and no bowel movements ) I've tried EVERYTHING for almost 6 months. I very successfully nursed my other two children for the first year with no problems..this is why this is so frustrating. I do need to be in better health to take care of my 3 lovely's( I barely have the energy to get thru the day with my two little ones..I usually nap with them)...so, I will probably go ahead and ween my daughter now and begin Atkins. My milk has never agreed with her no matter what I ate or didn't eat. (been a lonnnnggggg almost 6 mo.) Weighing the options...seems like the best thing to do. My doctor was extremely alarmed at my #'s and was very clear she recommended I do something immediately. And NO I will not be doing inducton any longer than the two recommended weeks. (thinking back ...that was more like 6 and half or 7 years ago when I didn't know that much about Atkins, other than word of mouth.) Again, thank you all so much for the advice! I REALLY appreciate it!
          Have a blessed day!
