  • Atkins bar question

I happen to be looking at an Atkins Advantage bar the other day. The front says 18 g protein, 1 sugar, 2 net carbs. Yet the NI on the back says 22 Carbs, 10 fiber and 0 sugar alcohols. How can this only have 2 net carbs??? (choc peanut butter)

    thanks, Kelly

The count on the front of the bar is correct ... however, it's not simple math (total carbs minus fiber minus sugar alcohols) ... it's the Net Atkins count. What's missing from the nutritional label is the gylcerine ... which by law isn't allowed to be included ... to that's the "missing" carbs.

I bought a box of the bars and a four pack of the shakes. Pretty sure I downed the lot of them in 2 days flat. So much for control. Left me with cravings like nobody's business. Phew!!!

This is EXACTLY what happens to me! The shakes don't do it, but those damned bars! Ugh!! I've never had a box last more than a day.

I realize I won't win any fans saying this here, but I think the caramel nut bars are out of this world and taste just like candy bars. They're the only Atkins bars I like, and I bought them early on thinking they were Atkins-friendly. I don't buy them now for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is because I will go through them quickly as well.

            Re: Atkins bar question

I don't have that bar here but the unaccounted for carbs usually comes from glycerin that the Atkins company relies on. They cannot legally deduct those carbs as non impact carbs as we do with fiber and sugar alcohols. There are not any studies confirming the claim that glycerine has no impact. There is some discussion about this here and there on the net.

Thank you all for the information. One more question - if I put this into fitday.com do I put just the net carbs into the carb section and therefore ignore the fiber count altogether on this item?

              Thanks!!

                Liv,

I'm not understanding what you're saying here.

They can't account for glycerine on the nutritional label since the labeling laws forbid it, but how does that mean they can't "legally deduct those carbs as non impact carbs".

The carbs from the glycerine are being deducted, just like fiber and sugar alcohols.

Yes ... you have to make it a custom food.

I know they are but they cannot print that on the nutrional label because the FDA does not allow that.
so many people do not understand why if there are 18 carbs in the product and 10 fiber the company will claim 3 net or something.

The question here is whether the glycerin will be absorbed as carbs or not. We have no real confirmation here. So people are speculating all ways

A study on the early atkins bars did show that did raise blood sugar insulin although less than other bars and a lot less than white bread.

I don't get a blood sugar rush from them but I find that glycerine taste too sweet. In a pinch I would have a bar rather than something illegal for sure.

                        Re: Atkins bar question

Just a quick mention as no-one else has said this yet - check the list of ingredients to decide which phase of Atkins you are going to include them in. You will see the choc peanut butter advantage bars contain milk, soya and nuts, so really are not 'legal' till the 6th OWL rung
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
