  • Oil for frying - What Should I buy?

    Hi everyone!

On my way to the store, and hoping the jicama shipment came in, they were out on Saturday. I usually fry it up with a combo of butter and vegetable oil.
I have Crisco "vegetable oil". I just read the ingredients and it is 100% soybean oil, and I would like to stay away from soy at this time. What would you recommend as the next best choice for frying jicama, that cooks the same as "soybean" vegetable oil?

    Thanks!

Vegetable/soybean oil is terrible for you. Why not give coconut oil a try? It's great for frying. I get mine at Whole Foods.

I've used 100% canola oil for years for all my frying.

And hey, what time is dinner at your house? I'll be right over!

Well considering the amount of time it takes to peel and slice up jicama into matchsticks, you may be starving by the time it is ready, but come on up.

Has anyone ever used olive oil for cooking/frying? Like frying a steak? Cuz i only heard of it being used to garnish salads, as by the Italians.

Also, what about grapeseed oil? Was shopping with my aunt the other day, she's been using grapeseed oil recently, probably felt it was healthier than olive or something.

I've cooked with olive oil...works just fine while frying a steak (though I prefer butter ).

The "vegetable oil" you're referring to is likely canola oil (or soybean oil, or a blend), which is not good. It's processed under high heat, pressure and often solvents are added to keep it liquid.

Coconut oil is the best (IMO) oil with which to cook. It is lest reactive to heat/light and doesn't tend to cause any inflammation issues in our bodies once heated. The taste/smell is mild, though I'll admit, if you're sensitive to coconut, it might not be for you.

My top (and only) two choices are: coconut oil and butter. I don't like heating olive oil for cooking.

I use olive oil for frying all the time. I do use peanut oil to make jicama fries...it browns them really nicely

I used to use it alot too, until I did some more research on it:

The least stable and therefore most nutritionally dangerous fats to cook with are the omega 6 vegetable polyunsaturates like safflower and sunflower which, because of all their double bonds, break down under heat into toxic substances like free radicals and trans fatty acids you and your body do not want! The monounsaturates like olive oil are more heat stable than the polyunsaturates but your best bet for cooking is still the saturated fats.

I don't use it a lot, I prefer butter. Sunflower oil is the cheapest and easiest to find here. I'm not a big oil fan, never have been, but thanks for the info, I never knew that.

I'm using olive oil for jicama fries right now because I just happened to have a large quantity of that. I think I prefer the peanut oil for that, though, and plan to get more of it when this big jug of olive oil is gone.

i use Olive Oil or cold pressed canola oil for frying. if i want a buttery flavor i'll usually fry in one of the above oils and melt butter towards the end of the frying process (since butter burns so easily but tastes so rich). i hope they get the jicama soon!
