  • How much water is correct?

I have been drinking about 2.2l (74oz) of water a day, is that enough?
Can you drink too much water and then end up retaining water, also is it unhealthy to drink too much water?

Sorry for all the questions but I thought it best to ask those "in the know"

The minimum set by Dr. Atkins is 64 oz. Most people do better drinking more than that. In general, the more one weighs and exercises, the more water one needs. Aiming for half your body weight, in ounces, is a good idea and I've often seen it "work" for people.

No, unless you have some medical condition and your doctor advised you to do otherwise.

also is it unhealthy to drink too much water?
Nope. Drinking a gallon in 10 minutes is not be the best idea ever, but spread throughout the day water is not unhealthy. Quite the opposite!

      Hey!

I had a quick question for Georgina regarding how much water one should drink. You said one should drink half of ones body weight in ounces. Should I be measuring my weight in lbs or kilos? At 65 kgs should I be drinking about 75 oz or 32 oz???

      Thanks!

Sorry, I should have been more clear. It's the weight in pounds, so 75 oz.

No one should drink less than 64 oz.

          Georgiana,

Thanks for the reply, I think 164oz of water a day might be a tall order , but I'll try to increase to about 100oz and see how it does.

          Have a great day,

Stuart it will all help. And there is no hard "evidence" that says the water works, but so many people report losses when they are drinking ample water you just can't ignore the anecdotal evidence. At first you will feel like you are running to the WC every 5 minutes, but after a week or two your body will adjust. Also, keep a bottle at your side and just sip every time you think of it. Don't try to chug it all down in one go. That helps. It may take a couple of weeks for you to get up to 100+ ounces. That's OK. This is a process. Your body is making a lot of changes at the moment. So is your brain. Just try to do a little better each day.

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

Thank heavens my brain has finally caught up with my heart when it come to weight loss.
I have always had a huge battle with this issue and finally I feel like I CAN DO THIS!!

BTW, does it matter if I had 17.3g of carbs yesterday and a envisage 20.3 for today?
can one be under one day and slightly over the next?

I didn't realise beef jerky was high in carbs, had 1oz today, thank heavens I checked before I had any more!
Here is SA it's called biltong, and I do love it although it's so flippin expensive!!

Yes, you can drink too much water...

Why Drinking Too Much Water Is Dangerous

Be sure to spread your water consumption throughout the day. Do NOT sit down and try to down all your water at one sitting. It can be deadly.

                  >>you can drink too much water...>>

Keep in mind that in the example given in the article above, the contestants weren't allowed to eliminate the water.

Water intoxication is rare ... and going to the bathroom works!

                    No.

However, being consistent is a good goal.

While we may drink our 64 or 100 or more oz of water a day, spread out the consumption. If you drink more than your body can process at a time, perhaps it'll be St. Peter who offers you a key to the facilities.

Here is another gathered from Wikipedia:

In 2008, Jacqueline Henson, a 40-year-old British woman, died after drinking four litres of water in under two hours as part of her LighterLife diet plan.[15]

It wasn't the amount of water ... it was the TIME FRAME ... her system couldn't process it ...

If you've ever had a pelvic ultrasound, you know that you don't die from drinking 64 ounces an hour before the test ... you do get to pee! Something that it appears didn't happen here?

Not arguing at all ... just trying to make sure it's understood that it's not just the quantity of water.

I have increased to about 100oz but it's spread over the whole day at work and the evening, so I'm sure I won't be meeting St Peter soon (unless it's not water related)
