  • Help with using Fitday

Ive been using fitday the past week or so and its been great helping me get a more realistic idea of how my food is tallying up. Im using the PC version and its a great package of tools.
Im pretty good at keeping roughly in the 5-30-65 ratio, but I have some questions.

If we're only counting useable carbs then fitday calculates the calories of all my carbs not just the useable ones. So while the calculations show that my carbs are 10% of my total, by the time I take out all the fibre and recalculate then its more like 5%. Is there any setting so it only calculates the calories in the useable carbs.
For example everytime I add in psyllium husks it adds fibre AND calories AND carbs even though I know psyllium is not contributing to my caloric consumption or my carb load.

Is this just a limitation of the program and I just have to keep doing the final calculations manually like this?
    Thanks in advance..

    Re: Help with using Fitday

Paul, the percentages are nothing more than very rough guidelines. Furthermore, as you go up the Carb Ladder, your fat percentage will decrease as your carbs go up. Otherwise you'd have to eat more and more calories to keep your percentages unchanged.

In the US, calories in food are measured using a bomb calorimeter. This is why fiber has calories on the label. In Germany for example, total calories on labels are equal to 4x(grams of protein)+4x(grams of net carbs)+9x(grams of fat). But this is not the case in the US, as you've seen in FitDay.

You don't have to calculate anything by hand. The way FitDay calculates is fine.

Don't obsess about percentages. They are not that important. There's absolutely nothing magic about 65-5-30.

Thanks for that Georgiana, I wondered if i was getting a little too focused on the figures.
Fitday still helps in getting the rough figures correct and shows me where Im going wrong if I make a big blunder.

You know that the PC Fitday allows you to have a column for "Carbs minus fiber" ...
